Thread: I broke my Backbone!

    I broke my Backbone!

Second time I have written this post......First one got swallowed....

OK, I have a Shim Backbone that has done me really well for years, it is partnered up with a millionaire-S....

Anyway with drag settings being paramount whilst fishing the reef, and after a snag, and, and, and..I snapped it.....

What I have done is glued a 2 inch piece of stainless welding rod inside the rod.
It looked real good until this morning, I placed some pressure on it, and it doesnt look like it will do the job at all... What is your opinion? Can it be fixed?
I have already replaced the rod with a Daiwa model, but it would be nice to keep this old gal going..

Simmo sell it on ebay as the new chinese hot thing in fishing rods, a fused backbone rod

Nah just kidding I have no idea, Dans thought sounds good but no harm in trying I suppose.

or I could give you a couple of my best GBR marks so far...you should be safe fishing with it around those

    good luck with it fnq

PS what about a piece of fibreglass rod as the insert, can be bought from Hobby shops I think??

I was thinking maybe wrap it, around the break, like it was a guide or something?

(I will still happily report on your marks tho FNQ! Send em!!)

Not an overly expensive rod, I'd retire it. Make up some awesome story on how you broke it to tell your mates..

    Mate
You should wrap it to give it some backbone.

    Hi Simmo,

Not uch you can do about it unfotunately. If you broke it near the tip and you still have some length in the rod you could put a tip on it and move top guide if necessary. Then it can be a short reef rod and be still be used although action is greatly reduced depending on where you broke it.

    Cheers

Hehe, Thanks guys for the info.
I rather thought that it was time to bury the old gal, but geez its been a good rod!
OK, so it was a 20kg Albino coral trout...towed us around on the anchor for a while, got it to the side of the boat, put the rod in the holder to grab the camera and bang....goone!
