Anchor / mooring swing & Sea Anchor

We spent the first nights at anchor and a mooring in Rotto the other day, and I was thinking, it would be nicer if the boat wasn't swinging quite as much with the wind.

Could I let out a sea anchor tied to the stern and would this reduce the frequency / speed of the swing? Is this method safe enough to use even in open sea whilst fishing?

sounds reasonable to me .... but don't forget that's only going to be effective when there is a bit of a drift.

If the waters not balistically deep, why not throw off a stern anchor?

    Hi Grumpsmurf

I doubt that the sea anchor will solve the problem.

If there was enough water flow to make it work you wouldn't need it anyway.

Have you thought about laying out two anchors with normal chain and warp in a straight tight line and attaching your boat to the centre of the warp between them with another line. Your boat swing would be a lot less as you could use a shorter line to attach the boat to the "temporary mooring".

You could make life easy when your retrieving the anchors if you attached a light and a float to each (at the retrival end) so you can haul them in using the float line.

    What do you reckon?

Hi, I think the best way is by exactly what u said with a stern anchor but you cant let it down in real rough conditions believe me i no from expirience that it can capsize you if the stern anchor gives way
