The 6500BTR is as tough as nails but its no where near as comfortable as the newer designs on the market. I agree with reidy that shimano are the only ones who have a baitrunner that works properly.

I bought the 3500 and loved the way it performed so i went and got the 6500 for those heavier applications.
They do a great job for their purpose.
Just my 2 cents for an alternative. You can buy the Daiwa Entoh Tournament or Emblem Pro and get Baitrunner conversions for them at about $30 .... I'd be going that way as you could use the reel for much more applications .. nearly 300g lighter than a 6500 Baitrunner too.
The link for the conversions ... at the bottom of the page .. funny enough I used to live just down the road from these guys.

Recommended Shimano baitraunner size for fishing the pelagics up her ein GOve?
What line capacity does each size take?
What size line (breaking strain and dia) and type (braid or mono) shoudl I be using for the Sapnish Macs/ Cobia, etc.
My preference is for something lighter if I can get away with it...

No spinning - just live bait use for these reels will be employed.

Hey Reidy,
I have 3 Aero baitrunners in the 8010 all bought when they first came out. Magic reels. How long have you had yours???? It is probably due for a little TLC. Be patient and slowly do it yourself or send it in for a service. Apart from a little end play, my reels are spot on. Just gave 2 a service over the weekend. Drag washers need replacing but thats it. I have accounted for quite a few good reds from wello and green over the years.....you just let them do their work. No resistance for the initial pickup and then pop it into gear......Bobs your uncle!!!!!

Good day Shane,
My probs with the reels stem, she twists up rather badly under moderate/heavyish load so making it impossible to rotate the handle (twin paddle). If the cut out section of graphite in the stem was still in place she would be a1.I guess my over kill drag tension dosnt help much but my mates br4500 handles it well with no twist.
Cheers

Hey Reidy,
Not too sure whether you mean the handle stem or the spool stem twisting. Both however point to possibly being bound up inside the reel with excess dry or no grease or even worse sand and salt grit. Has the reel been dunked?? You will find that the "paddle' handle is the dyna balance, if it is this that twists it will probably need either the stem to be replaced or the main gear that the handle stem goes through due to being worn. Imagine a square peg in a round hole.....they can't lock together.
The stem of the spool is designed to oscilate up and down but also rotate to eliminate line twist coming back onto the reel. No reel will handle heavy drag settings over time. It is possible that a component inside the reel has deformed due to too much load but more likely to be "stuck" and not operating properly. What line capacity do you use?? Is the drag still smooth? I give all of my reels a pull down service every 3 to 6 months regardless of useage. Hope this helps.
