    Samurai NV8

    Hi All,

I am planning on building a spin rod for impoundment barra and also for salt water plastics for fingermark and the like. I am planing on running 20-30lb braid over it and when fishing plastics for fingermark, fishing jig heads up to 1oz in weight.

I really like the nv8 as it has a good solid tip section and bottom end power. I am prob going to make the blank 6'6" total length by removing 6" from the butt. What I planning to do is fit a split grip setup. Has anyone done this to this blank??.

I am looking at fitting a fuji ips 16 reel seat (if fits?)etc and use cork for grips. i really like the comfort and feel of this model.

I know fuji has brought out a new trigger seat but has it released a new style comfort spin style seat that also could be suitable?? Fuji aust site is so out of date .

Any help would be muchly appreciated

    Mate

Go to the Fuji web sight and then email froglies and ask them the question.
They have responded to me in the past.

    Re: Samurai NV8

    Hi Aaron,

I have built an NV8 for barra, it gets used when I go to Awoonga, which unfortunately has only been a handfull of times.

So I can only give an opinion on the rod and NOT advice on how to chatch the barra!!!!

So here goes, imo I wouldn't shorten the rod at all, once it's shortened that's it...unless you are 100% certain, go for it.

I use a baitcaster on mine, spooled with 13 or 15kg braid... or close to, & it casts beautifully even though my baitcaster is a very old ABU.

I also wouldn't go past cork, the stuff lasts for ever and always looks great, even with a bit of age on it. I certainly regret not building mine with cork, I used eva and will live to regret skimping. Cork won't break down over time but eva will.

As for your other choices, I've never used a trigger grip/seat on any of my rods, so I couldn't comment there.

    good luck with it

....Finga sent me a link to one of the big US sites with regard to the trigger grips. I would certainy use one, however the ID only went up to 16mm.

Would fit on my NV7..... when I get around to it.

    Thanks for the replies.

Have contacted fuji and have been sent info on their new spin comfort reel seat that has just hit out shores. It looks the good and comes in a size17 as well .The model is VSS-SD17. Will be using 1 when stocks hit shops and rod building suppliers.

    Cheers

Yeah, the VSS is a very nice looking seat. Will be interesting to see the pricing when it gets here...

    Re: Samurai NV8

yes VSS is the new seat...it is more 'straight' in shape than the IPS as it does not allow for the grip to come over the reel seat as much as the IPS. Another reel seat to consider is the SBS.

i'm about to build a rod for exactly the same purpose...as ryan mentioned i think the NV8 will be too stiff in the tip section. a lighter tip will be better for casting but also allow some give during a roll retrieve as there's minimal stretch in the braid. I've settled on a Hastings SW70M (also available in a 6'6") mod-fast action light enough in the tip but plenty of grunt...

    Re: Samurai NV8

Try a GUSA 604DHX or 665DHX. Great blanks for Barra. The 605A DHX is a little heavier than the 604. They will pull a Samurai backwards.
