Re: fishing hinze dam from yak ?

Plenty of people fish hinze from yaks.
Launching at eastern arm from Range Road entered from Little Nerang Road UBD reference is 46 r 14.
Please dont park your car in the turning area at ramp.
The other access point is on the western arm ubd 46.c.17 off the nerang murwillumbah road.
Basically head from nerang to murwillumbah for 11k after the old dam turn off at advancetown road.
Look for a dirt turnoff with no signeage.
For the first time just keep on going till you come to a bridge with a bend in it where it crosses the nerang river. Then do a u turn ald look for the turn off on the RHS.
With the dam full you will be launching at the end of the road and will have to park back along road.
Will leave the yak guys to give advise on yak fishing as I fish from a tinney.
    Cheers
    Ray

Hinze is a nice small dam to fish from the yak on. Not too far to paddle. Mostly I have had success there with 3-5m divers slow trolled in about 6-10mtrs of water. Even slow trolling a g-vibe or jackall ultra slow will get you a fish most days. My last session there spinnerbaits and ponytail jigheads worked well for me cast over the flooded banks after the rain. If you have a sounder on your yak then you can also search for a school in the deeper water and cast jackalls/g-vibes or dropshot for them, works most days for me.

I have only ever fished the eastern arm. I have caught fish going either left or right from the ramp, even straight across from the ramp I pulled two fish in the first 10minutes the other day on surface.

Best of luck, don't forget to join up to AKFF its a kayak fishing forum.

Re: fishing hinze dam from yak ?

i fish hinze from my yak all the time,
its probably the nicest way to fish it, so peaceful and you have a stealth approach to fishing. Initially i was fishing without a sounder and did quite well but found casting at the points and steep banks the most productive. When i put a sounder on i experimented with trolling and it was very productive but i kinda lost interest and went back to casting, just so much more fun.

As said above you can launch from the eastern ramp at mudgeeraba or if you want some better fishing drive around on the numinbah road and theres a small dirt track leading to the last western ramp. You should be able to find a map with it online. the fishing should be better up that end as its been near impossible for boats to get in there and thus the fish havent seen a lure or boat in ages now.

Ive tried almost everything in the dam but find jackalls work the best. Masks are probably a bit more productive as fish hit them when they are shut down but TN60s are pretty good 2. If they stretch the budget try Kokoda G-Vibes

Start of fishing the points and deep walls as well as right up the bays,
it kinda changes day to day so experiment and see what works,

might see you out there one day, look out for a red and white swing,
    good luck
    Cheers,

    Ben

the Humminbirds are a great sounder.
    in my opinion.
if you had probs I'd sugest it was probably a cheaper model. or the transducer was broken or damaged.
if transducer is damaged it can stuff up the sounder .like if the ducer has crack in it and water has gottin inside the result will be a sounder head unit that will need to be fixed due to short circuit..
i have a Matrix 20 which is buget model matrix but i have it shooting trough hull in 65m of water and getting great detail and clarity
and in fresh water the quaility is brilliant.
if you are concerned over the cost of a jackall i'd suggest the souder you bought was a cheapie??
Timm Morgan wins tornaments fishing with Humminbirds sounders.
why do you think that is??

There is actually going to be a large Kayak Fishing camp and competition organised through BFO and Sports Tuition on the 10th and 11th of may. If anyone is interested dont hesitate to PM me.

Should be good as we usually clean up on Bass with the occasional Yellow and silver. Also teh Toga at Hinze have been far more active than usual.

you are entitled to your opinion but the fact is after havinig more than a dozen humminbird sounders in previous craft the two units i mentioned were indeed rubish and the back up service from the aussie suplier was non existent other than to keep wanting to supply a new unit every time one sh!!!!t it self and no there were no craks in the transducer or leed and also it was fitted to the yak to the exact instructions of huminbirds aussie repairer also your coment on my concern of the price jackals and buying a cheapie sounder is unfounded by the way i see Tim morgan was knocked out of the afc and has,nt won a bream round for while by the way if you think jackals are so great perhaps you should take up mitch calcutts challenge and see how the jackals stack up i,m sure we would all like to know how you go. Cheers and good luck Bosco

    Big Bosco PM zsent mate.

    But a simple overview:

On the 10th and 11th of May a bunch of people will be hitting up Hinze by kayak for 2 days.

We will be either camping or staying in the Numinbah Cabins. Food, live shrimp, dam permits etc will all be included in the price (which is TBA).

Ill post more info as it firms up.
