Barramundi World Record

Hello all

I was having a nanna nap this arvo and just caught a glimpse on the idiot box of a pending world record barra up at Tinaroo by a 13 year old girl. I did not catch the whole story, however it has left me wondering whether or not I would keep a big girl for the sake of a record.

This thread ties in with a few recent, and ongoing discussions about catch and release, and personal choice, so was wondering what others would do, and if the answer was yes, what and how do you actually claim one???

I think that for me personally it would be an enormous milestone, especially with my background from the Far South coast of NSW, to land an Australian icon up here in an internationally recognised dam such as Tinaroo. I mean, I only ever read about Barramundi in Aussie magazines and never thought that I could do what I have achieved since moving to Cairns, catching multiple meter plus barra, let alone the "chance" of a possible record fish one day. This was jst a dream back then, and now this is reality.

Let me know your thoughts, as am interested in everyones choices and decisions....

Not that it matter much, the report I saw on TV the little lady caught it in the Barron! closed season and all, the media.... sheesh!!, said to the wife it didn't look like a salty, better than the netters getting it I suppose if it was. Anyway can a person claim a record from a stocked impoundment?

FNQCairns is right the Barron, I say shes well in her rights to take the fish. Its a big one yes and a breeder but its her first Barra and as it so happens it could be a world record for a junior.

As if it was me who caught a monster fish and could claim the record then yep I would it would be a hard thing for me to do I will admit but gee to be the world record holder for Australias pinnical sport fish well yes i would like the title.

Well last night's new's told us barron river! Now this will start another debate should stocked fish be rated for world record's?My mate held the world record for junior's a 22 kg wild barra caught at wearyan river NT on 6kg i think there should be some sort of recignition for large stocked barra but maybe not world record's i mean you could have one in your pool.Was'nt there a 37kg swamp dog hauled out of tinnaroo a few years ago?Good on her for catching a nice fish and good luck to her if she get's a record.Dan......

i would definatly, if its a world record of Barramundi, one of Australias great fish, y wouldnt you, there are lots of em around. but im talking about a barra in a dam as they cant breed, and the big ones are usless besides the fight, (which is y most people fish for em), but i would have to think bout it in the saltwater. thats my opinion.

With out doubt ( & the fish would end up on the wall) ..... However I , like most (I guess) fish outside the rules ( tackle... line in particular) which automatically disqualify us from claiming one.
Plus ... you need to be in an IGFA affiliated club .

PS .... I hear there are some who chase records on light mono in impoundments ( trolling) ....... I'm still coming to grips in my own mind with the legitimacy of such a practice Nagg

I am in an ANSA club and I have a few records myself. I have no problems keeping fish to claim records as I never take home a bag limit, just try to take home 1-2 'trophy' fish. Also, just because a record is claimed does not mean that the fish is not eaten.

FYI - you have to be in a club - ANSA or IGFA - to claim State, National and world records. There is some confusion over whether ANSA are eligible for world (IGFA) records and I would love for someone to set me straight. Clubs provide the rules as to tackle requiremments and how to claim.

Doesn't Tinaroo have a section called the 'Barron Arm'?? Maybe that's what they meant. I too am an ANSA member but it is a shame you can't release record fish and still claim a WR. Personally, I'd be happy with proving my catch on a brag mat and a few decent photos.

Would kill me more to kill a monster barra but am not against someone else doing so - especially if they are stocked fish.

The baron arm is a branch of tinaroo dam, so she is entitled to take 1 fish in closed season from the dam. As far as I am aware you don't have to kill the fish to claim a record so long as you can meet the rules of ansa, ie you have to weigh the fish on land ( this isn't too hard in a dam), you have to use certified scales and have someone other than yourself weigh the fish, then you have to measure the length and girth of fish and take a photo of the fish showing these measurements. All of this should be achievable in a dam and then the fish can be released. The main stumbling block is the cost of certified scales which have to be calibrated each year.
The world record senior holder is from an impoundment barra so there shouldn't be any reason why a junior record can't come from a dam as well.
To kill or not to kill is a hard decision, but I'd like to catch a 40kg barra to have to make me decide. I think I would have to decide on the day. cheers scott.

I had a similar experience off Bermagui on the Marlin, the fish i tagged was double the fish that was winning the comp at the time, but a pow wow with the other crew members, confirmed my thoughts and it was let go. The prize sometimes isn't worth it. It would have been major surgery to clean it aswell.

Just still couldn't bring myself to kill one. How jacked off would you be if you thought it was gunna be a record and you missed out. You would end up with a barra that would be on the wall, which was close to the record, but not quite, or dumped in a bin somewhere, or a lifetimes supply of cat food. You could also give it to those people you've always promised fish to!!!!!

Personally if i caught a massive and definitely a record breaking fish I would release it. I see no fame worth the value of that fish and its existance. Just to have caught it and taken a pic would be more than enough for me.
