i know cloud cover rebounds the signal and makes it travel longer distances
Yesterday we were fishing at the northern gutters ( 30km nnw sandy cape fraser island) and it was one of those days that it was so calm, you know , the sort that makes you enjoy being alive and fishing out in the wide blue yonder, when,(and i have heard this phemonenom before) that we were hearing vessels talking to each other from as far away as townsville, yes townsville, and was as if thay we next to us, and as far away as the gold coast, and all inbetween.
We listened to this for a good 4 hours on and off, and if you had asked me yesterday, i could have given you a blow by blow account of what was biting, where ,and the vessels names!
Has anybody else had "one of these days?"
Cheers, Insideout

"Skip" is a pretty common phenomenom.
It occurs when the radio waves continually bounce off the ionosphere and the earth.
It is directly related to sun spot activity.
Of course these days it's probably caused by global warming and it only lasts until the waves hit the hole in the ozone layer
Cheers,
Owen
The whole world's mad save thee & me (but I'm not too sure about thee)
Hehe, the last couple of weeks have showed up some wicked 'tropospheric ducting', vhf contacts have been made via normal FM transmissions all over the AP region!
If you have a telly at home, try scanning on a blank channel, you may get NZ tv!!
All magic stuff when you can also play on other vhf and uhf bands.. Some very good signals to be had.
This site may take a little to get into, but if you get the gist of it, it will indicate the possible 'path' of communications.
