Yamaha 50hp 4 Stroke Trim Tilt Problem

Hey ppl,

Got home from fishing yesterday and after washing my motor down, i went to adjust the trim (it was in the up position) and all of a sudden the trim/tilt switch stopped working.

I left it overnight, and tried it again this morning, the motor moving around 1 inch, then i tried to trim the motor the other way and again - no movement.

I took the cover off the motor this afternoon and got the multimeter out.

When you press the trim/tilt switches, you can hear the solenoids ticking over, and using my multimeter i was able see that this part of the wiring is doing its job (ie the wires to the dc motor that drives the hydraulics are getting the required 12V to operate - the polarity of which is being switched by the solenoids).

The yamaha trim / tilt motor looks to be a simple 2 wire dc motor - also there is another harness (not connected in my motor) which i assume is for trim/tilt feedback to a console fit installation (mine is tiller steer).

I've taken the top off the motor and the motor looks fine. Just wondering where to go from here. Should I remove the allen key bolts highlighted, and try to remove the entire motor?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated- i am keen to make the most of these few days I have off.

I have just been down this road!, my trim tilt would work fine all day but if you left it sit for a couple of weeks the motor would not work, but if you gave it a light tap on the top of the motor that would free the armature and allow it to spin. Genuine parts they wanted just under a $1000.00 to fix, non genuine $650.00, i found out i could buy a brand new motor out of the States for $130.00, (i would have prefered to buy local but the markup was hideous) but thanks to Finga's confidence in me i took the motor off, gave the bushes a quick clean , sprayed some WD on them and it hasn't missed a beat , these motors are notorious for getting a touch of condesation in them and that causes a bit of corosion on the bushes. Cost me 40 minutes of time and a quick spray of the good stuff to fix.

When you sprayed WD40 on it - where abouts? Over the windings that are shown here?

not sure if i did the right thing but i sprayed it over the bushes and inside the caseing to prevent any more condensation , and since then it hasn't missed a beat .this was the recent thread :http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/sho...ight=trim+tilt

Ok, thought I would report back.

Spent the day today listening to the cricket and pulling the DC motor apart.

One of the internal terminals had broken, and there was some minor rust on one of the terminations.

I had to make a custom crimp to fit to the broken terminal, and I did a clean up on all of the wiring and grease.

End result of the days work is its now working again - so it was well worth the effort put in today - I can hit the water tomorrow

great to hear , that small amount of condensation was the cause of my problems and with any luck the WD spray will stop it from happening again.
