Hi guys, im interested on your thoughts on leaving your sounder on or turning it off while fishing anchored up. Does it really scare the fish off if left on or not? Ive always turned mine off as ive been lead to believe this is the way to go?? Looking forward to some comments, thanx Deano.
I turn mine off too but don't think it is as much of a 'turn off' for fish as other boats (especially aluminium boats) anchoring close and then turning on a radio to listen to rock and roll or one of those mindless chat programmes. The sound from that can turn a prolific fishing spot into a dead zone as soon as it begins.
I have seen it happen so many times and watched the occupants sit there and wonder why they cannot catch fish. I either move or go inside for a rest until they go away. It is becoming more difficult to escape from brain dead idiots who have so little going on in their minds that they cannot tolerate silence and are forced to fill their heads with musical or vocal drivel.

Ok guys it seems im on the right track, just that ive seen a few threads saying they watch baitschools etc. while fishing was making me wonder. Tigermullet my new boat doesnt have a radio/stereo in it, my previous boats did, i normally put on a bit of quiet music, maybe im better off with none at all. Depends if my mates are getting annoying or not Quiet time( no music) while fishing is cool but. Thanx for the comments keep em comin, cheers Deano.
shallow water might make a diff but in 40 or more meters it doesnt matter, i like to play them some tunes to get them excited, dunno if it works but i enjoy it and they stiil bite.
I cannot back this up Dean because I have forgotten where and when I read or heard it but it was reported/discussed/argued that the sounders do not really turn fish off the bite but that it did deter dolphins from coming close to your boat. The sonar interferes with theirs. The comment was along the lines of, "If you want to see dolphins close up then switch off your depth sounder/ fish finder".
When the bream are thick around the boat next season I will try turning the sounder on and off to see how they react. It should be interesting.
I don't think it makes much difference. I'v tried it both ways and have always caught fish, and here in sa we fish relatively shallow compared to you eastern guys. For example, the other night fished in 13m of water and had snapper to 10kg feeding on our berley on the surface with the transducer ticking away quite clearly and we still got our boat limit of fish.
gday deano thanx for stopping in yesturday good to see ya and thanx for giving me ya flu he.he. I always turn my sounder off when anchored in any depth. I do leave it on when drifting. As for the stereo mine cranks always and has never put the fish off on the reef. merry xmas boy's talk soon.
regards wadeo
I leave mine on and have no problem at all, and yes I like to listen to music when I fish, theres nothing better than pulling up a monster and having your favorite song playing in the background. But then again, I'm fishing in about 70m of water.
