New rod for my Calais DC

    Hi all,

My kind wife has purchased me a Calais DC for Xmas and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on a suitable rod to match for mostly saltwater action? I have been looking at the G Loomis PR844C & MBR783C, any thoughts?

Bubba ... your wife's a GEM! Nice little stocking filler that!
What 783 are you looking at GL2,GL3,IMX or GLX ? ....... what will you fish for ? & what line class ?
The PR844C is overgunned IMHO for the reel you are going to use with it ( better suited to a reel like a Calcutta 400).......

I'd be looking at the BCRs , CBRs or MBRs & just match up the length you want , line class & then performance/ budget ( GL3 , IMX or GLX) .
..... Best of luck with your choices .... Nagg

    Hi Nagg,

Thanks for the reply. I was looking at the GLX MBR783-2C, I do a bit of traveling so it would be nice if I could pack it away in my luggage. Would this setup handle a barra? Not sure what line weight would best match this rod & reel either, any advice?

By the way my wife is a gem, but you don't want to know what I had to buy her in return. There is always a catch!

    Thanks again

Hi Bubba .... Nice rod! , but more aimed at bass & jacks than barra ( but having said that my current wild barra casting rod is a CR722 GL3 ... & its rated 8-14lb .... while the MBR783 is rated 10-17lb) ....... So it might be a good choice ( specially in 2 piece) ..... Loomis rods do pull a fair bit more thar their rating ! Nagg

Cheers for the info Nagg. I decided to go for the GLX MBR783-2C and purchased one last night from the U.S. Not a bad time to buy one with the U.S dollar so weak at the moment! Thanks again for your time and have a merry xmas.

Very nice ..... let us know how you go with it! ..... The GLX has such a crisp action & light as ! ... I'm sure you'll love it! ... Nagg
PS ... If you bought it a month ago ( $A = US$0.94) ... you would really be laughing ! ................... i'm actually spending a fair bit OS ATM upgrading or adding to the armoury for the very same reason (value)

Recieved the new rod yesterday, wow!

Any thoughts on what line I should be looking at loading on this combo?

    Cheers

10-16lb for your bass and jacks, and maybe think about getting a spare spool for something like 30lb for ya barra. I dont look at much shimano gear much these days, does the calais have turn key spool access?

    Hey Whytey,

I don't think the Calais DC comes with the option of a spare spool, not quick change anyway! The whole assembly of the reel seems to be held together by phillips head screws. I don't fancy taking a screwdriver to my new reel either! If I have to go with only one spool I think I will probably go for the heavier line. If I went for the say 30lb line for barra would that rule out smaller fish like bass/jacks on this setup?

    Cheers
