Advice needed on Daiwa reel.
I have acquired a Daiwa reel, Model J-40R. I bought it off e-bay quite some time ago and have never used it. Obviously, it is 2nd hand, or 3rd or 4th hand. The drag is pretty lumpy. It is probably pretty old.
I have googled the Daiwa setup, but can't seem to find anything about it.
It looks like it could handle a bit of punishment by the line sizes, but I'm afraid I really don't know what it would be good for.
It goes: .040m 270, .045 185, 050m 160, which is pretty heavy stuff and using thin stuff like Platypus Platinum, we could probably do better.
Can anybody give me an idea as to what I could use it for? As in rod weights, and line breaking strains etc?
Many thanks,
TOL

Re: Advice needed on Daiwa reel.
Hi TOL.
Probably make a good bait reel for tailor etc, 7-8kg line, surf rod.
I think this is one of their largest reels, I'm not familiar with this model but have seen it on Ebay at times.
Should be pretty easy to dismantle and clean, maybe replace the drag washers with some cut from fur felt and or teflon sheet, replace the head bearing if necessary.
Long as the line roller still turns as it should, the old beast should have a bit of life left in her.
Cheers.

Re: Advice needed on Daiwa reel.
Thanks Nigel,
As you said, I might give it a general clean up and I think I'll put some 20lb Platypus Platinum on it and use it for whatever. I stuck it on a 7' 6-8kg rod yesterday and it seemed pretty balanced.
