    Alvey 650c5

I have an Alvey 650C5 which has not had much use, recently I noticed that when the drag is on I get a clicking sound on winding. Similar to when the fish alert is on except not as loud. Is this normal and how do I stop it. Fishing for Tailor last season I was getting some stares from people thinking I had the fish alert on!

Yep the drag should click....... depending on the vintage and size of reel either 2 or 4 times a revolution.

It's not realy the drag but the anti reverse.

depending on the reel this will be either the lever that sticks out the front of the reel back or a little nipple type knob on the back.

ther should be two " switches" one for the ratchet and one for the anti reverse.

the drag is in play all the time adjusted by ther star or lever depending on model.

Personaly I fish with the anti reverse off and kick it in with the lever ( i like the lever version) when needed.

you should be able to down load either a manula or parts break down of the alvey site.

go on the site any way and request a catalogue.... it has lots of good stuff in it too.......if you ask nice they might even send you a dvd......that is good for the alvey beginner.

Don't be worried about the other blokes lookin at you....... either thay are jelous because they baught a cheaper model or they are egg beater users and dont know what a proper surf reel should sound like.

Thats a big lump of reel to have in you hands too........I'd get down the local footy field when there is no one arround & get some practise before you go out in public with it.

cheers and good luck with a proper surf reel.

    cheers

Thanks for that oldboot, mine has got the lever to engage the anti reverse. I'll head to the alvey site now and see what else I can find out. I appreciate your help.

    lxc,

If you're real concerned with it strip it down and check out the guts of the thing. Their pretty simple so it shouldn't be that hard.

I prefer to have the anti clicking cam removed, so you can hear whether or not the anti reverse is on. This is very important if you use the E series reels.

The Alvey site has a bit of extra info with respect to parts and assembly.

I think you are refering to the silent drag cam....... there isnt one in a C series, the drag clicks if it is on and the fish alert realy makes some noise if it is on.

I am happier with alveys, oiled rather than greased.... they run so much smoother and the fish alert is soo much louder......... light machine oil or lanox.

    cheers

Oldboot. The newer metal back C series (injected moulded fibreglass spools) have got the silent drag cams.

I agree that it is better to use oil or a very light grease. It allows free movement and eliminates the possibility of the cam missing a beat.

So true...I just recoe'd 3 x old 5 series Alveys I bought off e-bay and used a light lanolin grease. A few weeks alter I went to spool them and they had gone all stiff...the grease had 'set'. In future I will use light oil, lannox or silicon as the grease isn't the best.

    Re: Alvey 650c5

After visiting the Alvey site I was able to fix the clicking of the real when the drag was on. I found it in the FAQ section.

Here is the link in case any one else is having the same problem. I am definitely silent but deadly now!
