landbased fishing with S.P.s

just wondering how successful people have been fishing with S.Ps but landbased, both surf and river/estuary fishing? I suppose the hardest bit would be to find a good spot and not having a sounder puts one at a disadvantage as you cannot be sure that there are fish there....

any thoughts/comments?

i have had success with flatties by wandering sandflats at high tide in water up to waist deep, casting ahead as you go. As the tide drops move over & fish the dropoffs at the edge of the channels. again always cast ahead of you ..

Spose it depends on what u call sucess. I fished the tweed river for about 5 years with no boat and in that time i have ended up with a handfull of fairly reliable spots which often involve wading out to structure at low tide and losing lots and lots of lures.. Even so I am addicted and there is a sense of satisfaction about having limited gear and getting a result...Soft plastics have far and away produced the greatest variety and numbers of fish as opposed to bait and hard bodies- for me anyhow....

After being Boatless for the last 5 weeks I have developed an appreciation for all you land based anglers. Its much easier plastics fishing from a boat but in saying that I have seen plenty of good results from land based fellas. Last week I fished Woody Pt and around the Hornibrook bridge, pulled fish from both spots. Nothing massive but fish all the same. Today I fished the flats near the Sundale Bridge at Southport for 1 Flattie of about 45cm. While there I came across a stormwater pipe with a stack of small Herring being storked by a couple of Trev's well over 40cm. Got the heart racing, but they couldnt be tempted...I will be giving them a crack again

i've done a bit of sp work on the beach of carrickalinga in s.a. and i do ok with them. i've only used sqidgies and by the reports on the gulps, i'll be giving them a go for sure. its hard to find time when you've just started a family. but its all worth it. i will get more time in the near future.good luck with your sp work

I have done most of my SP fishing landbased and flathead and pike have been the most often caught species but I have also caught a few tailor, whiting and flounder. I predominantly fish around Wynnum/Manly/Lota. I have got flathead up to 55cm landbased but majority have been small ones.

u dont need a sounder to find good spots. in a boat you normaly find the structure and cast towards it( casting towards the bank) so why cant you cast along the bank??? i fished with sp's for a few years without a boat and think i learnt alot more then land based fishing then when i had a boat. i fish for bream alot and its supprising to see bream up and over 800g swimming on there side to get into the shallows to chase a prawnt or lure. yes normally you do get more fishing from a boat and have access to alot more spots. my biggest flathead,bream and jack were all caught land based. 83cm for the flattie in waist deep water 2 min away from my house. a bream 44cm fork lenght and a 57cm jack up in a local creek. walking along the bank can also sometimes allow you to put a lure right nest to the pole on a jetty or beside the trunk of a tree.
its also awsome because alot more of that fishing is visual!

I had a quick fish on Saturday on the beach at the Goldy, fished 2 hook rig one with fresh beach worm the other with SP worm. Result 1 dart on each. I guess I'll have to continue my experiment another day!
