Gbr Dead And Rubble Within A Decade!!!!

Fair dunkum just heard this claim on the 7 news, if we do not decrease carbon emisions to save the reef from a 3deg temperature rise.

The inmates have absolute control over the insane asylum and this was from so called scientists....what a load of crap. Also the call to reduce fishing on the reef was again mentioned by some vocal watermellon.

Bloody lucky the typical boat loan is only 5 years...but who will buy it when it's paid off WHEN these cretins get their way!!!

    cheers fnq

This site shows the temperature trend for Willis Island, site of a weather station in the Coral Sea just over 400 kms easterly from Cairns.

The Willis island data shows no trend since WWII.

Re: Gbr Dead And Rubble Within A Decade!!!!

The media need some training on how they report things esp in the last year or so. The headlines for most articles is either sensationalist or downright misleading and the articles are worse.

Recently I was talking to a retired professor of journalism while waiting at the dentist and he made comment about how the trend of the reporting style is degrading both the psyche of the reader and the morals of the journalist and it should face an industry shakedown. This from a man who taught journalism at universities for near on 40 years. Makes you wonder about their hard fought right to the freedom of the press and where it has led to.

I live in fear of the day some dipstick from PETA buys out someone like Packer and gets free reign over the media outlets.

I commented on the Courier Mail article and it got approved and published on their website. Here is the details

Well, isn't this finally the truth coming out! What were all the recreational fishing closuers for the reef for then? I thought it was to potect biodverity and habitat in the reef systems but it is climate change and pollution doing the damage. So it is this segments time to say "I told you so"; all along the receational fishing lobby has said it is pollution kiling habitats which is the core issue - not a family going for an outing.

I wonder if the continuing wish to close Moreton Bay is going to end up the same way - the EPA are so far off the mark wth protecting waterways from pollution it is laughable, yet the poor fisherman gets the blame again -when will they wake up to their own sillyness? One wonders....

This consensus on global warming was presented in Bali:

I didn't here about this on the ABC news!

wouldn't it be great if the same percentage of scientists agreed on the causes of the last major ice ages, including the one 10 000 years ago, let alone the various mini ice ages.............

    I heard that too
what a load of CRAP , that would be like saying in 10 yrs we don't have to pay taxes anymore.
the GBR has survived the WORST that nature can dish up to it and a rise of 3 degrees in water temp will only give it more warmth to grow , why else did it grow where it did , warm tropical waters is the answer.
    give me a break.

Isn't coral bleaching a result of rising water temperature?

If you only believe what you're told. They haven't got a clue but if they can add it to the argument for global warming which is a theory repeated over and over again to get acceptance and then somehow believed as fact...
Any fishing is good fishing (should probably say Any fishing is...probably going to be illegal soon)

Nibbles - welcome to the Green Propoganda Machine......that is exactly what they say.

So what 'stats' will we come up with to send into the public and let them become fact....? I am sure we can find something......

    Matt
Water temps already rise and fall every year up there by 6 to 7 degree , its called winter and summer.
I spent 3 years pro fishing out there and got to see and experience the best and worst of what it cops from nature and human activity and the worst comes from the land from floods washing out all the crap we leave on the land.
The crown of thorns starfish ran a muck some years ago and we wore the blame for that too......ooooohhh it's killed off the reefs....not a chance , the reefs grew back better than before, it's all part of the die off and regrowth that it's been doing since Noah ran aground in the ark.

global warming..climate change..carbon trading etc etc etc..blah blah blah...if these leaders were serious about their carbon emissions they would not have flown to Bali..they would have just had one huge video link up...they are all full of crap.

Re: Gbr Dead And Rubble Within A Decade!!!!

Pinhead and Pickers i totally agree with you guys and i too am sick of hearing about all of this crap day after day, i don't even bother much with the evening news anymore because you know whats on even before you switch it on. If they are so positive that all of this is happening then why have'nt all the governments of the world stopped all foreshore development if these areas are threatened by rising sea levels. Dubai is a classic example.
As for the reef well they like to blame the fishermen rec and pro how they damage the reef i don't know or they blame the farmers for water run off, fact is the farms have been right up the east coast for a long long time and farm practices have improved dramatically over the years to stop setiment runoff and the only thing that has dramatically changed is development and that brings you right back to Moreton Bay thing.

I don't know myself but have any of you guys ever seen what happens to the reef after a cyclone comes through and how quickly does it grow back ?

Re: Gbr Dead And Rubble Within A Decade!!!!

A 2007 Scientific article by Graham et al which studied the impact on green zones (MPA’s) in the Seychelles found that reefs that were open to fishing actually recovered more quickly from coral bleaching events than those covered by green zones!!

Here’s what they said in their paper:

“The MPAs seem to offer no long-term resilience to the populations and assemblages. Although the MPAs may meet short-term conservation objectives by reducing fishing mortality on larger fish, future replacement by small fish may be insufficient to maintain abundance over the long term. The collapse of the physical structure of Seychelles reefs accelerated as recently as 2003 (Engelhardt 2004), so the longer-term consequences of this process are yet to manifest in larger size classes. The lag effect of reduced replenishment will likely be longer in MPAs than in fished areas because mortality rates are likely to be lower and therefore age structures of the populations will be extended. Nevertheless, greater predator biomass inside the MPAs could result in higher rates of predation on smaller individuals (Graham et al. 2003; Mumby et al. 2006), ultimately increasing the severity of the lag effect.

In other words, because there are (not surprisingly!) bigger fish in reefs that are not fished at all, following a coral bleaching event, these bigger fish eat all the little ones, who have nowhere to hide! So it takes far longer for the reef to recover from the bleaching than a reef where fishing continues to be allowed.

This shows there is unbiased research into the effects of MPA’s out there, the papers just don’t report it…..

And it could be concluded that fishing helps reefs to recover more quickly from bleaching events.
