12 foot clark tinnie? wot size motor?

    hey fellas im new here

i just bought myself a 12 foot clark a while ago and it came with a not new/not old suzuki 8hp 2-stroke and it goes like stink when its just me and a mate in it but as soon as there is three people it wont plane.

i was just wonderin i was thinkin about gettin a 15hp fourstoke yamaha or honda is this a good idea or do reckon there would be problems with weight and too much power and so on?

the reason for gettin a fourstroke is mainly for fuel economy and noise level.

    thanks

    G'day

Stick with a 2/ in that hp range, a 15 or 9.9 will chew bugger all fuel anyway. Much lighter and will be able to pull a skier if you so choose.

    hey

thanks for that yeh i was kinda tossin up the idea of two stroke

do u know if they are any good for trolling?
and is there much noise difference with the new 2 strokes compared to 4 strokes?

coz the one i got makes a racket

4banger will be much quieter at idle and lower revs, and a little quieter at full noise,

Trolling, a 4/ will be preferable, however most 2 strokes will be ok. Some may have a tendency to oil up and run a little rough with extended slow speed work, but a quick run of high rpm will fix this.

Mate i have ur same tinnie on a property up north, put a new 15hp mariner on it in 2003 and its never been serviced and never missed a beat. Great little motor, it cops a hard time, but i should get it serviced 1 day

    G'day

I'd suggest the best motor for your expectations, budget and needs.

Best to put up the make and model and year of any engine you have on a short list so someone can tell you if they have known inherent problems.

Personally I have a US built Merc, and i love that little donk

    hey jock

have you had a look at the Tohatsu range? ive got an 18 2 stroke on my 12.5 footer and she honks! About 6L per Hour flat tilt! 22knts with 3 people on board and plenty of gear of corse! to give you an idea my mate had a 55 on a 14 foot clark tiller steer but up graded to a 40 merc 4 stroke that has trouble getting up and going with all the gear onboard for a weekend over their island the 55 didnt have any trouble but used about twice the amount of fuel!

Hey Jock, My first boat was a clark cutter 12ft and it was under powered with a 9.9hp mariner. Before all the 4 strokes hit the market I repowered it with a johnson 20hp. It went like a dream and it wasn't too powerful that it would become dangerous. But I'd agree with Boatie and go for the Tohatsu 18hp. The toughest two stroke out there in the small motor range, I know from using them in surf lifesaving and they are deadset bullet proof. Let us know what you decide.

    Hi Mate,

I would have to agree a 15HP would be ample power, and I don't think you could go wrong with either Johnson or Yamaha.

I traded a 15HP Johnson 6 months ago, which seemed liked it would go forever, perfect little motor than never caused any trouble in the 5 years I owned it.

Yamaha is my motor of choice now, having owned a 4 stroke for 6 months now.
I wouldn't go back to 2 stroke, much quieter at idle, but is much heavier than comparitave 2 stroke.

    Cheers
    Scott

    hey Dean 1

my 18 is a pull start ( 2 pulls when cold 1/2 a pull when hot!) but i think it is an option for electric start. there is a modle with electric start available. if i rember correctly the easest way to put electric start on my moter was to buy an altinater kit which came with the electric start flywheel and then buy the starter moter or the satarter moter came with the kit cant quite rember! but why would u bother with the extra weight of the starter when it is that easy to start with a pull starter?

JTR it will still go like stink with 3 in it or at least still be smelly if you prop it down to suit the extra load, will still be noisy, all small 2 strokes are. $200 odd has got to be better than $3k+, to get to the same end.

    cheers fnq

Hey Boatie its just that my uncle has that motor with electric start which he bought new a few years back, he's in his 60's so it suits him right down to the ground
