    trim-tilt motor dodgy

The trim tilt motor on my merc 60, 2004 model is starting to play up , it is definitely the motor , i have checked the relays and they are fine, typical it couldn't be a $2.00 fix. If your out in the boat the trim-tilt will work fine all day , if you leave it sit a couple of days the motor takes a while to work , so i assume it would be the brushes that run next to the armature, so the question, replace the motor , are the brushes replaceable, and can the trim-tilt be taken off without removing the engine.
    Cheers darkside.

If you cannot unbolt the trim motor without removing the assembly (likely) then you can remove the entire assembly without removing the engine.

Its usually 4 bolts in the body of the system and the cross pin under the swivel bracket. The leg will need to be supported when the system is removed.

Brushes should be easy to get.
Rebush/rebearing the motor whilst your at it.

I would not rule out the relays still though.
If I remember your motor would have 2 plug in relays in the cowl. One for up and one for down.

Does it play up on the up only after it's been sitting a while or also on the down??
Normally people only try the up as the outboard is in the right down position when it's going to left for awhile

An easy way to check (if you have the 2 plug in relays) just swap them around when when it's playing up and try again.

As they're only an automotive relay (again if my memory is okky dokky) then it may
    be a $6 fix

finga , thanks , tried the relay scenario , it doesn't go in either direction , and i put the tester on both relays , yes it is the two wire version, once i remove the motor where would be the best place to get it rebuilt.

    Is it a sealed motor??
If not you can do it yourself if you can get the parts.
Just thought...did you try both points that you can use the tilt. The forward control and the switch on the motor and do both play up??

have tried all that, is definitely trim tilt motor , if you give it a light tap it frees up straight away . and according to the manual it does come apart , but probably only once if i was to try , and i would end up with a bucket load of leftovers .

I had the exact same senario with a Volvo trim motor. After it worked once for the day it would be fine until it sat for a week then it would play up again. I pulled it down, cleaned and greased the bearings and it lived happily ever after.
You can check the brushes at the same time but I doubt they are worn if its only 4mths out of warranty.

They are quite easy to repair. Just be careful of bearing shims in the end cap. Make sure they all go back in the same place or it will put exessive load on the armature when you tighten it down.

If you get into trouble I'm sure someone on here will help out.

    Cheers

seems a tad odd that a trim motor should play up while it is still reasonably new (4 months out of warranty) I know "things" break, but they usually go for many years before they crap out! but I guess it is possible!

noelm , so true but just proves nothing lasts forever, especially when it comes out of the warranty period, just talk to westinghouse about my washing machine, and a huge thanks to finga who has offered to help me put it back together if it turns ugly.
