    Re: Good Guide For Awoonga

Hay mate your right Awoonga is a big dam. But is also very hard to navigate at night if there is no moon. (You have to no the dam). I find casting not at weed beds but over them this time of year is the way to go. I mean you find ad bed under the surface about 2 metres and fish your lures over the top at a mixture of retrieval rates. I find that Soft plastics seam to work more effectively then hard bodies.IMO. But patience is the key. If you fish a spot for 10-30mins then move you wont or will limit your chance of catching a barra. The best way to fish Awoonga for Barra is to find the weed bed then either hold 20m away from it with the electric or anchor 20 m away from it. Then fish the spot for a least 1-2hrs. This is because the fish wont be on the bite the minute you get there. You have to entise them to hit your lure or anoy them to hit your lure. Barra are like any fish they can feed for 20 mins of they day then they wont for the rest of the day. And sometimes they can feed all day. Hope this helps.

PM me for any more Querries.

P.S The fishing in the dam at the moment is quite hard going. You have
    to work for the fish.

Give John Mitchell a call, he is the resident Awoonga guide, and a good one.
He is on the water most days and knows the fish movements up to date.
There is way more science to catching Barra than pulling up at weedbeds and casting, and John will show you why.
You can contact him on 0429 723757.

The dam is fishing sensational at present, excellent stable weather for the past week has got the fish firing, and very few boats on the water.
That will change very soon as holidays approach.
    Cheers
    Jas

Hi doublexl have a fun trip. Looks like your timing is excellent.

You could do worse than to read anything Jason Wilhelm (Matrix) and Johnny Mitchell have written or produced on DVD etc. 2 Top articles written lately are in Freshwater Fishing Mag (Jason) and on sweetwater fishing (Johnny). Do a net search for sweetwater as there are some very good articles on there.

Reading anything else might be out of date & clowd the mind too much. These 2 guys live at Gladstone and have narrowed points down to the most important one's regarding Awoonga Barra.

Have a great trip. Merry Xmas from Lyndon & Kel
