From web searches, these filters are for diesl fuels?? Are they OK for my petrol engines? I know Whitworths site says not recommended for petrol, but why not?. And if not, what should I replace them with? Is there something that will be a direct fit?
They will be fine. I have always run the CAV/Delphi 296's on every outboard I have owned for over 15 years. The non-petrol recomendation used to apply to polycarbonate bowls as they would craze with petrol.
Yeah they should be fine, but consider purchasing from a truck spare parts store, they will/should be 25% cheaper.
Only a couple of things, they flow around 40L/H, this claim is on the low side because these units were designed to suit the trucking industry so they give quality specifiations not like most other marine companys that rely on marketing first and specifications if you find them or know someone who owns a filter testing laboratory.
Part of the reason for the low flow is the ability to capture water decreases with increased flow so depending on your engines rated flow consider 2 for each (in parallel)- still a more cost effective purchase than some of the marine filters available given a little time to recoup. The element prices are grossly cheaper.
I recently confirmed this direct with the company- HDF296 are good for petrol.
Use only original Delphi HDF296 ( heavy duty) replacements and they should cost as little as $6.00 each. The HDF is a spiral filter with much better flow and filtering ability and also better water exclusion. Do not use the non HDF version or any other brand element as they have issues with glues and paper used not suitable for petrol and especially ethanol enhanced fuel. They also don't have decent flow rates or decent construction. My only complaint is they can show surface rust fast so we spray them with clear lacquer in a spray can after writing hours and install date in texta on them. The ally chassis they fit onto can look powdery after a while - I wish they would bloody well annodise it!!! Delphi website sucks - what did they do with teh old Lucas one. It has no spec sheets etc ect
12 years service for me with them and no complaints and the injector filter on my motors doesn't ever get changed on normal service schedule.
The proper delphi ones should come with a full kit of new gaskets and o-ring. With other brands these are not always petrol proof.
We have had failures and problems with all other brands and especially the generics- don't use non original products and clean bowl when changing. The other reply about polycarbonate bowls was correct and you should have glass ones for petrol.
thanx cormorant, i've found it hard to get info off the delphi website. we've been looking at water trap style fuel filters with a clear bowl because we've just got the ones that look like an oil filter and i've been wondering if the diesel ones are ok with petrol. thanx for asking the question grumpysmurf.
