Went on an exploratory mission up a creek north of Mackay this morning with the aim of getting as far up the creek as possible to the brackish-salt/fresh interface where Jacks reign supreme. Unfortunatley after 2 hours of pulling the punt ova rock bars we were defeated by a log jam , not far from our destination, at least we think, so we turned around fishless in search of another creek not to far away which we had a sneaky suspicion could produce the goods.
We arrived at spot x, this time making it to the salt/fresh interface at around 11am, we were thinking it was a bit late in the day when Trent got smashed by small Jack around 30cm in 50cm of crystal clear freshwater, you beauty. He got it on a laser Pro. I then tied on a the old faithfull SX40 which has produced in these situations previous, and was smashed by 2 yellowfin Bream to 32cm in the shallows all visible takes in the crystal clear shallows.
A couple of casts later after watching a few smaller Jacks follow out my SX i saw a big Jack appear from no where and smash my SX40 in only 2 feet of water and go straight for the sticks, a great battle eventuated and after a heart stopping minute the Jack was on board for a quick photo before being released. It went 50cm (TL) and was caught on my bream gear (Diawa sol 2000/Loomis4-8lb) 6lb string 10lb trace. Ended up with 3 more Jacks to 35cm, a Tarpon and and a good size Archer between us, all on Bream gear, all released to fight another day. Bloody awesome sight fishing, with all the takes and follows easily visible..
Cheers
