Gear box oil if uncontaminated will last as long as the life of that motor and beyond so the trick is to check for signs.eg line round prop ,water intrusion .
your a braver man than me, i like my motor to be reliable when i go to sea. i guess you never had to dig bits of impellor out of a motor before.

You obviously have a beef either with E-tec's or not changing impellers/water pumps on a yearly basis just because people say you should.
So please enlighten us about your story of digging out bits of the impeller from the motor.
BTW no one has suggested that the E-tec's should go for 3 years without touching them.It all depends on the circumstances and as everyone knows there is a certain amount of preventative maintainance and regular visual inspections to undertake with any mechanical devise.

    fair enough DS.
For the couple of hundred bucks to have someone replace the waterpump/impellor regularly its probably not a bad thing.
For a regularly used boat in clean water ,though is it really necessary to do it every 12 months?
