Fished tanga resort this last week with fish_outta_water. After last year's fantastic results this year was down quite a bit in terms of fish caught both by us and around the resort itself.
We had quite a bit of fun fishing bread and chicken thigh underneath the pylons of the resort jetty. Caught some nice fish, including some good size bream (dropped a monster just as he was being lifted), blue puller (the one that looks like a drummer) and what I think is some sort of wrasse. Had to lock the drags and wind damn fast to bring in anything of size before it hit the pylons or was found by the cormorants, who regularly killed the bite with their incessant presence. Happy moments were everywhere as well.
Also did some flathead fishing along the sand flats both north and south of the resort. Toward the south at tangalooma point I saw a number of flathead and some baitfish being spooked but only managed to land one flathead. He self-released as I was grabbing the camera out of my bag. Went north on two seperate days, walking all the way past ben ewa casting plastics and definitely saw more flathead up that way. Between Carl and I we landed about 6 or so smallish flathead and carl managed to get some underwater release photos with his new waterproof housing on the camera. He also just about filled his dacks when a large dark shape surfaced right next to him in the shallowsBloody dugongs! There were also dart in the shallows and a big shovelnose shark that I cast right next to thinking it was a log that might have a flathead next to it.... whoops!
The trevally that were smashing baitfish at the wrecks didn't show all week either which was disappointing. Between us we tried large poppers, small poppers, medium poppers and glowing plastics but we couldn't raise a scale.
Night fishing at the jetty still produced a few shovelnose sharks as the week progressed. Managed one smaller fella and another better sized shovel on the new live fibre/gld combo which had no issues taming the shovels quite quickly. Carl also caught a starfish on half a pike and I managed to hook a grinner through the back of the head on a plastic. One fella hooked what we think was a shovelnose on a handline and had to borrow a glove to try and land it. Unfortunately, he lost him about 15 minutes in and gained a nice set of welts on his arms as the battle scar. Another 5-6 foot specimen was lost at the foot of the jetty last night as well.
We also got to fish with young Sophie, who at 5 is the keenest young angler I've ever met. Her heroes are starlo, bushy and tim morgan and she's already a tournament angler! Look out Kim Bain. We might see a sleek pink tournament bream boat hit the circuit soon
All in all it was a fun week. I'll be back at the same bat time and same bat channel next saturday, hopefully with even better results.
