    Loss of Power

    Hi Team.

Just back from a fishing session.

On the way back, my Johno 1989 110 HP 2 stroke donk lost power.

    We limped home really.

I suspect I had water in fuel - as it behaved like this to my limited expereince.

Would watered fuel cause low of power to donk - or is it somehting more serious?

How do I diagnose/troubleshoot this latest bout of frustation wiht the donk.

Previous trips were wonderful after my rebuild - without a hitch!

I did disconnect the fuel line (to test existing known flooding situation) after every stop becuase I still have starting issues.

    Next steps??

BTW - Caught my first SPansih MAc today - felt great!

Hi there Splash, mate check for spark on all cylinders.
You might have one dirty plug and that will be enough to upset the motor.

    Re: Loss of Power

Splash pull all your plugs and inspect for anything strange, will not be good news if there is, even look droplets of water.

Like Gary says you need a compression test, but in the meantime you could drain your fuel tank or at least investigate the water angle, do you have a water seperator?

PS hope you were not running the 17P???

    cheers fnq

Also check fuel line to make sure it is not perished or cracked and sucking air. Happened to me halfway between peel and manly in the middle of the night once. Terrible feeling when the motor just stops going.

    Re: Loss of Power

    Hi Team.

Apologies for not getting back to you all sooner.

The only signal tower in Gove went down and the whoel town was wo internet for a few days. It is still very patchy. I hope my $180 per month for this stupid 3GB is milking Ziggy's pockets with gold.... :-((( !!!!!

    ANyway, thanks for your comments.

I pulled the plugs and all look black (dried unburnt fuel/oil I think) around the top of thread. Signs of scorching not evident.

No chance for compression test yet.

I was removing the fuel connection every time I stopped for a fish to prevent the usual poor starting episodes... Could I have let water/air in this way inadvertenetly?

    FNQ - I retained the 15P prop.

    THoughts..??

    G'day

Test for spark? Take the lead off at the plug, and expose the crimp a little. Hold the insulation with the bare crimp about 5-10mm away from the block or any suitable earthing surface, have someone turn the engine over and you should see a spark jump. What color is it?

    Hi Blackened.

I do not understand what you mean when u say "crimp". What is the "crimp" and how do I expose it? What do i hold the insulation with?

Can I use a head surface as a suitable earth?

How critical is it to have the oil container full? Mine is currently half full.

    Re: Loss of Power

Morning splash, Borrow a mates 25l fuel tank and go for a run on the remote tank, this will rule out all fuel lines, tank pick-ups, breathers and water in your vessel. If the engine still doesn't perform up top, while running along push the key in a couple of times, If it picks up your chasing a lack of fuel problem.
If just rebuilt I would be carring out a compression check first. You can put the plugs in the leads and rest them against the block have someone crank it over should be nice crisp blue spark, What's your max spark advance?

    Re: Loss of Power

    G'day

crimp is the bit of metal that snap crimps onto the spark plug, sits inside the insulation boot on the spark lead.

To expose it, just slide the boot back.

    Use the head surface.

    Re: Loss of Power

Splash if you get a lengh of rag and twist it like your wringing it dry, then fold that over the spark plug lead and hold the ends then you won't get a zap.

I use a rag mainly cause it's always close at hand, and couldn't be stuffed bending over to find me pliers and let that slip in the drink as i'm trying to get a spark.

You can always use a spare spark plug, if you can't pull back the boot far enough when checking for spark.

just tested for spark - all four ok.

colour - yellowy/white with a tinge of blue - Implications of this colour?

Impact of having half full VRO tank?

    Re: Loss of Power

Splash check your fuel fittings to make sure your not sucking in air, check your breather on fuel tank is not blocked, check your carby bowls for water Iam sure theres a screw on the bottom of the bowl unscrew and see if water comes out. Polky.
