Is being smoked big time better???

So you've been out fishing and landed not a thing........ but you got busted of by a monster.

Is being smoked big time better than comming home with a few ordinary fish?

    Cheers

If i've caught no fish then i'll be glad to get smoked and have a good fight with a fish

Frankly no, no point losing gear for naught. If the fish was big enough to smash the 10 or 15kg gear I use inshore, would prob be too big to eat, in which case I'd just as soon not hook it. Also, a bit frustrating losing a big fish....................
As for beach/rock, same story, why get a sore back for nothing! Most (but not all)large jew can be beached with patience, mainly monster rays etc that can't be stopped, rather not tangle with 'em but hey, you get that!
    Cheers!

Standing there with shaking knees, eye's like saucers and hearing your heart thumping in your ears after an encounter with an unseen BIG whatever is an incredible feeling.
I know that I don't remember every fish I catch but I'll always remember "those' tussles

For me it's all about being able to drop a lure precisely where you want it and gettting anything to climb over the top of it. As much as getting the fish into the boat is great, getting smoked is equally as satisfying and even more so if the lure is returned.

normally, and the way i voted, i would say no, rather have a small feed than a unknown, mainly because in the estuary it could just be a big ray but also because i would rather get a feed for my efforts. i dont purely fish for food but it is good to take home a few nice fillets.
On the other hand, I like to go to monduran to tussle with the impoundment barra and i would seriously prefer to get wasted by a big fish up there than get no action at all. i fact i plan to fish harder then ever next time and continually down size lures and leaders until i do get some action......anything to avoid the dreaded doughnut.
If i have to use bass gear to get the strikes then so be it.....but i'll use all the tricks in the book to avoid being smoked. could be interesting

    cheers roo.

The great thing about being smoked is you can tell ya mates it was a big cobie or a huge snapper or maybe a record winning spaniard!! No idot would tell them it was a fatarse stingray or Bribie Island racing mullet would they!! .

Smoked leaves me with an empty feeling and if it happens a couple of times in a row, lighter tackle box. Chance to go out and buy a couple of new lures. I reckon too much meat and potatoes style fishing gets a bit stale so the balance is the key-win some and lose some.

    Exactly my thoughts!

The most pleasure I get out of fishing is watching my brother, old man(my fishing buddy) getting smoked!!..rofl.

I go way up north QLD every year for 2-3 weeks. My brother and old man come along aswell. Each year we take up bigger and better gear and each year we come back with a smoked tally numbering in the dozens. I remember getting hammered 13 times in 3 hours fishing off a rocky point. I was fishing with 60lb line on a shimano Tyrnos.

This year just gone my Brother went out and got himself a brand new shimano tiagra with a 24-36kg rod spooled with 80lb line. We were fishing in 4m of water on the second day and he got smoked, not once, but 3 times in 15mins!!..lol good times.

some fish are just so big you have no chance.

I can't remember all the fish that i've eaten but being snotted is a story that stays with you for a lifetime. I think it is particularly appealing to the 'sport' fisherman as there is no sport in being able to skull drag in every fish.

Sure being smoked is a blast and it gives you something to talk about ,but it also leaves me feeling empty after realizing i haven't been prepared properly. Two summers ago out at the 4 beacons i was jigging up some livies and i caught a small snap , i dehooked him and threw him over my shoulder and a massive mackeral over a meter long swooped up to the surface and devoured the poor little bugger . i saw it all happen in front of me so i kept cool got another couple of yakkas and moved away from the beacons and anchored . Well the first one didn't even hit the bottom and i got smashed ,no hook no livie the lot gone so as you can imagine the blood was pumping and i was struggling to tie a knot. Second one down i put on the biggest leader i carried then 60lb leader and you guessed it smashed again no hook or leader this time i persisted 60lb again down it went and this time i was on the line screamed of the rod at a 100mph i hung on waiting for that first run to end ,but the bugger just kept going 3/4 of my spool on my charter special goooooooone i finally got some line on him then another run and leader letgo so i packed up and went straight to the tackle store and bought some single strand brown wire .It was exciting while it was all happening but it taught me one hell of a lesson ............matt
A bad days fishing has got to be better than any day at work......

Don't mind being smoked by a good fish, makes getting the next one all the better. Hate it when I lose a fish because of my fault, bad knott, too much thumb on the spool etc. If you caught every fish you hooked, it would be boring.

    Hell yeah!

An old post of mine and the most exciting "smoking" I've ever had. I doubt very much that even in such a short lapse of time, that I will ever be as strong as I was in this old post. My days of seeking out big vermin are numbered, I'm afraid
