    Exclamation Monster at Scarborough

After reading some reports last night about there being school Mackerel around redcliffe Jetty and Scarborough area I thought I would give em a shot. So I set my 6' 10kg boat rod up like they said with pillies on a gang hook under a float. I launched the kayak at about 4.45am and go to spot X(about 2.5-3km from tyhe shore) first cast of some SP I'm onto a Wolf herring it was jumping everwhere anyway I got two of these. I look at my float which is about 75m away now and there's like a mini tsunami follwed by a whirlpool and then all of a sudden BANG my rod and reel just go off ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ is all I could hear for about 5mins after finally managing to get some line back on It goes for another run but this time all my line tangles so I'm there trying to untangle my line while I have whatever this thing on my line is. I fix the tangle and Tighten the drag right up to regain some line, it still pulls line off the reel. After about an hours battle I finally get it up to the kayak I look down and whoa It's a huge as Shark(looked like a bull shark) about 2m half the size of my kayak and weighed about 30-40kg I didn't want to cut the line cause I would lose all me stuff and it was the last set of gang hooks I had. I put the drag back on and the shark is takin off, I just head for the shore as fast as I can which at this stage is about 6km away. Every now and then I had to wind all the line back onto me reel cause It was taking so much at one stage I was down to about 10m. I get to the shore and the shark is still on, About 20 people come over and watch me pull in this beast. It took me about 1 and a half hours to wind in. I get it up to shore and then it SPAT the hook. I was thinking yeah that be right why couldn't it have spat the hook while I was out there. After that the tide was going out and all fishing action had come to a stop. I only caught a few undersized squire, 2 massive cat fish and a monster flathead at 87cm all were released to fight another day.

Sorry no pics haven't got a digital camera for Kayak yet but will be getting one soon.

Hi mate, wow, so you are sure it was a shark eh ? that would have been a little scary feeling being out there in a yak ?
I would have thrown my undies at it to keep it a safe distance away. I would probably also have cut the line, I am just not that desperate for a feed

Hi mate yeah I'm sure it was a shark and I didn't cut the line cause I didn't want to lose my float and stuff. It was probably the most stupid thing I could of done not cut the line. But eh.

EEEK !! I fish in a canoe from time to time and the very last thing I want is an encounter with a bloody shark, regardless of size.

Losing good gear is crap, but with a toothy bugger on the line you gotta weigh up the priority, ie having the bastard turn and munch your yak because you dicked him off etc

    Re: Monster at Scarborough

LoL man cans.. like a 2mtr shark vs a guy in a kayak, yeah I am sure we would all harden up and just go the biff to subdue the shark

I think perhaps if you had a 9mm ruger side arm you'd have been alright, get him close to the kayak, pop one in the back of the head and home to mumma !!
