20"transome 25"motor can it be done

i am thinking of purchasing a xl 25inch 140 suzi/johno 4 stroke motor to put on my haines17l which currently has a 20inch 150 merc 25 odd years old on transome
if anyone has any advice on doing this i would be grateful
also the approx weight of the old motor would be great

To make it simple - don't buy extra work for yourself.

I know there are things like jacking plates and the like, but why go thru the hassle and expense.

Just buy a motor that suits the boat, or a boat that suits the motor.

    Hang loose

I had an stainless mounting plate fabricated by the Boys at Coorparoo marine to allow the fitting of a 25 inch shaft 115 mariner to my hydrofield. Cost me $250 which was a lot cheaper than pulling the leg off and removing the spacer and cutting and welding the drive shaft.

One way is to get 4 pieces of angle, bolt 2 onto the transom engine mount holes then bolt the other 2 to the engine then bolt all together to fit engine, $80 for the bolts and if done in steel (protected of coarse) the angle would cost something like $40 for 50 by 50 by 6mm/8mm can get them galvanised even. You end up with a minimum 50mm setback but it can be done down to around a 35mm setback. Little extra stress but not much by any account.

    mers 150hp - big guess 160kg??

    cheers fnq

if you buy a standard old non adjustable Jacking plate, they are cheap as chips and easy to fit and have the added advantage of getting the powerhead another 5" out of the water.

    I do this quite often.

I use a piece of alloy plate 25mm thick. Bottom engine bolts go through the engine, plate and transom.

Another pair of bolts go through only the plate and transom as high up as you can get them. These bolts sit just outside the mount bracket so your plate needs to be about 60mm wider overall than the engine mount bracket.

The top bolts go through the engine and plate only.

Works well and looks quite neat and tidy. Will post a pic later of one I have here being done presently.

    Cheers

Hey Noelm, any idea where I can get a non adjustable jacking plate as I can't find a supplier in Aus.
