Info On Byron Bay and Northern NSW

Hey all,

I am going up to byron bay for xmas and new years, just wondering if it is worth taking my boat up, and do abit of fishing, (420 topender)

Is there any close reefs or good extuary fishing?
Boat Ramps?
etc....

Did a serch on the forum for Byron Bay and Northern NSW and didn;t get much info,

Any Info would be helpfull...

Hi Birchy Byron has off the beach launching only (contact local council for info). Brunswick Hds has a ramp but watch the bar (surfers everywhere). Merry Xmas good fishing mojo

Mate, your only real options for offshore fishing is to cross the brunswick or ballina bar. I would give the bruns bar a miss if not to confident on crossing bars as it can be a real bastard, depending on the size of the swell with ballina being the better option.. You need to have a key to acess the ramp in byron and you will have no chance in hell in getting one!!
You may be able to run the gauntlet and try beach launching at broken head if the swell permits but do it early as i am pretty sure it is not permitted.
Plenty of river options thou with the bruns and ballina river always worth fishing especially by boat. Good ramps at either bruns or ballina for launching. Make sure you have a fishing license mate as that time of year you wiill be checked.

i think the river option is prob more suitable, on the central coast where i am from there isn;t any bar's to cross, just launch and out the estuary and into broken bay and out.

Generally i fish for bream, flattys and abit of crabbing or anything that hooks up really, with soft plastics and some times bait,
what sort of fish and what sort of gear would you use in the river systems up there?

I mainly fish for flatties, whiting and the elusive jewie whin there on.
you can fish the walls towards the mouth for flatties and jewies using the placies with a high or low tide around dawn and dusk being the best bet for the jewies but that is opening another THICK book on the how and when to catch a jewie.
I couldnt catch a jewie at the moment even if it jumped in the boat by accident but there are a few around and i think it should get better as the month goes on but there are more people on this site much more experienced with them than me!!
There are also some good sand banks u the river a k or two which also provide good flattie fishing esp with the placcys on a rising tide but anytimne should see you get a couple.

Thanks for the pointer i think its sealed the deal, i will def take my boat up there then, and have a fish a couple of mornings,
