Many thanks for all of the great information concerning the Alvey Reels. As you Benno pointed out, our surf conditions are probably not as severe here on the Gulf of Mexico with exception to a stiff rip tide every now and then which is why so many use sand spikes / rod holders. After all I have read, I can't imagine anglers here have not embraced the product....maybe since Cabela's is carrying Alvey now with corresponding Alvey Rods, it will get more exposure. As a National Sales Guy, I think there would be a golden opportunity for high volume sales here in the states.
I look forward to building up my arsenal of Alvey reels, and will report back to the board.
hey pop a top I would be very keen to see some pics next time you go fishing over there. You should put a post in the reports section next ime you go. Those red drum are nice looking fish, they look like they'd put on a good show.
Thank you...I sure will. Sept, Oct, and November are the best months for the red drum (redfish) as they migrate from the bays into the surf and generally head into warmer waters. In Texas, we can keep what we refer to as "slot" reds, are those from 20"-28", and two bull reds, over 28". The larger tend to get a bit wormy, so not real good for eating, however, the slot reds are delicious, fried, blackened, or broiled in butter. Until my next time, check out http://www.surf-masters.com/msforum/default.asp for some recent reports and photos of some nice big bull reds.
Padre Island is a barrier island off the coast of south Texas that is approximately 130 miles long....it is separated by a manmade channel on the lower end. The majority of the northern part is U.S. National Seashore and you can drive upto 60 miles on non-developed beach, many times without seeing anyone at all....great fishing there around Big Shell Island. The deep water is in closer there, and many other big water species can be found including tarpon.
Thanks for all the information, and I look forward to sharing a few fish from across the pond!!!!!!!
