Thread: what was your first fish

Re: what was your first fish

My first fish was in 1984 I was 5 years old and was away at my dads shack in Tassie at lake Sorell it was a nice three pound brown trout.

My proudest moment diddn't come untill 24 years later when I took my little one out and she nailed her fisrt fish, the one in the Avatar. Its one thing to catch a fish but its another thing altogether to catch a fisherman for life. My son is next but I will need to invest in a bigger boat!!!

winter whiting with my uncle and cousins at green beacon off amity point, nth straddie. guessing that i would have been 4 at the most because i remember i was well and truly into fishin by preschool(age 5). Easy to catch....fun to catch....great eating but i have been told more recently by my uncle that the whole idea behind all the trips out for whiting was to teach us kids how to use an alvey properly.....so as u can imagine lots of bunches of grapes....line being wound on loose but the beauty of it was...there was never more than 10m of line off the reel at any givin time. im sure it required

These memories are definitely amongst my fondest.

My first fish was the barra in my avatar - I was four years old (1968) and I caught it on a flat fish lure on a $5 solid fibre glass rod and spinning reel rig. When I first hooked it it speared into a weed bed so when the old man came to check out my claims of a fish on my line he felt the dead weight of the weed bed and told me I was just snagged - so I kept on slowly pulling the mass in and when the barra stuck its head out of the weed and gave a bit of a splash - dad sprung into action to help me land it - I've been adicted ever since

The sad news is the round waterhole in Sheep Station Ck in the lower Burdekin River delta where I caught it hasn't fared well 40 years later due to the combined effects of irrigation pumping, altered fire and grazing regimes, sediment and nutrient loading (see attached) - part of what motivated me to get into environmental science - and as it turns out project work on Sheep Station Ck where we're currently involved in a host of fish habitat managment activities aimed to get the barra and other fish back in the system!

Great photos Jim......sad to see what's happened to great fishing spots over the years. I'd give anything to rewind thirty years and go fishing in some of my old haunts.

nice fish but that really sucks from a beatiful water hole to a grass hole you should work ot fix it up

Re: what was your first fish

The local community is working to fix it up - big success has been a weed control cost sharing agreement between landholders, local council, North Burdekin Water Board and Burdekin Dry Tropics the regional community NRM body - (see attached) of council and waterboard in action and end result - there are 1m + barra in these lagoons again now (mostly thanks to the stocking boys) - but we are working on getting natural (fish passage) connectivity to the estuary sorted and last year a Mangrove Jack was caught in one of the lower lagoons and fork tailed catfish have returned to the system from the lower estuary - so some connectivity is being established in wet season flows now weed mats are being managed - I also caught my fist Sheep Station Ck barra in 25 yrs (a little fella)- so that gave me a buzz!! The future's so bright I 've got to wear shades!!

Re: what was your first fish

Thats a great report Jim. I flew over the Burdekin a couple of weeks ago on a flight to Cairns, was a great view. Managed to take a few pics of the Burdekin & other rivers & lakes on the way, posted them HERE>>>

I think my first ever fish was a Eel Tailed Catfish from the Moonie River. Like you on the Burdekin, my memories from then until now are chalf & cheese. I remember as a kid having to swim horses across the Moonie, last time there hinting hogs on horse back the horses stepped over the river where once we had to swim. Tree clearing & allowing sheep to craze to the waters edge have seen the banks erroded & collapsed.

Can't say that I remember what my first fish was. More than likely it was a flathead from Lake Illawarra. But I do remember what my first Bass looked like. Went for my first ever bass session last weekend at Coolendel and picked up this little beauty.
