Encounters with jacks are usually brutal affairs often ending in being bricked by some unseen monster. Followed by the debate over what terminal tackle you should have used and whether livies work better than lures or strip bait over SP's etc..etc... What if i told you there is ANOTHER way of catching jacks.........by hand..!!!
Warning..!!!
The following thread contains a totally true story with as much "Class" as "Ass"..!!!
I often snorkel my fav fishing spot to check out the bottom structure and what scaled beasties are hanging around. I usually take my underewater camera with me to snap off a few pics. In one spot i regularly run into jacks and have noticed that there was one jack i had seen on previous occasions with about 30cm of algae covered line hanging out its mouth.(Obviously from an encounter with some poor sap) I have tried time and time again to get close to take a photo, as it would make a great pic, but Mr Jack always keeps his distance.
The next time i was snorkling there the visibility was about 20-25m. It was like swimming in an aquarium. I again saw Mr Jack with the algae line and not having my camera with me i thought i would see how close i could get to him. I tried time and time again coming in horizontally and at a 45 degree angle and still the bastard would keep about 3-4m away. Finally i came straight down vertically from the surface...ever so slowly sinking down due to the 2 dive weights. Just as i leveled out at about 13m and started to slowly peddle after him i glanced down and saw ANOTHER bigger jack about 0.5m under me with about 60cm of heavy mono hanging from it's gob as well..!!!!!!![]()

In a move i can only liken to that of taipan with jedi like powers, i shot my hand out and had one wrap of mono around my hand before Mr Bigger Jack went apesh-t. He was going for the closest boulders while i was going for the surface. I quickly pulled my dive knife out "pacified" him and shot straight back up to the surface. On reaching the surface my head was spinning (probably due to the minute or so i had just spent underwater at 13m on one breath) but i reckon it was from my first hand caught jack. I was looking around for someone to give me high fives but alas it was about 5:30am in the morning and i was alone. I stopped into work on my way home to attain the ultimate of bragging rights and a few pics.
Mr Bigger Jack went 48cm and it just goes to show that when the red critters bust you off they don't always remain unseen and get away scott free.!!!!
