Overhead Reel to Suit Live Fibre 15-24kg

    Hi Team.

I am chasing a suitable reel for the Live Fibre Rod 15-24kg.

I admit that I probably should acquired the 10-15kg version isntead - but I am now stuck with it.

My ideal criteria for overhead reel for this rod:
    - Bottom bashing only
    - Gear ratio up to 4.0
    - Light as possible
    - Lever drag
    - Use of mono
    - Chasing fish anything on/or near bottom (off Gove, NT)
    - Depth max 40m
    - No level wind
    - No TLD series

    Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Splash - What's your budget?

A TLD will fit your criteria...

    Budget - up to $300.

I am uncertain if I should aim for a level wind or not - which way should i go?

Ok - I have read enough now not to require a level wind.

    Anything else besides TLD 25?

Penn senator 4/0. Not lever drag tho

The Daiwa Sealine 30 is a top quality reel. Not only is it a lever drag it has duel drag discs. Its a bit over the $300 mark though (340-350 I think). Its not particularly light though being an all metal reel. Penn make a lever drag reel in this class which I think has a graphite body, but I haven't heard too much about them. Most people go for a TLD in this category. Any reason for ruling them out?

The Shimano Trynos is worth a look too. It has a 5 to 1 ratio though, but the gears are massive and it still has a lot of winching power.

    THanks boys.

I understand having a lowish ratio (4.0 or less) is ideal for bottom bashing - true?

TLD are OK and read alot about them - want to try somehting different.

Thanks Jeremey - will check out the PENN 4.0.

Billfisher - Which PENN model are you referring to?

Yes, you'd generally go for a lower ratio, though 40m isn't terribly deep. Also with a lot reels these days such as the Trynos the gears are truely massive and they still have good winching power with the higher ratios. They sell two speed model also. The ten year Shimano warranty is worth noting too.

Heres some info on the Penn:

Penn Graph-Lite™ Lever Drag reels offer the same great performance anglers have come to trust in the International Lever Drag reels but with a graphite frame. In addition to the performance, Graph-Lite™ Lever Drag reels feature satin finish graphite and brushed metal for improved long-term appearance; as well as an easy-to-understand line class designation. Two-Speed 20lb, 30lb and 50lb models are available for your individual fishing preferences.

Re: Overhead Reel to Suit Live Fibre 15-24kg

Have just bought an m10 classic live fibre and have bought a Penn GLD 30 twin speed to put on it. It looks a damn good outfit and the two speeds should come in very handy. Fish outta water (who I bought it off) rates them very highly. I wouldn't call it a light reel but then I'm used to bream gear, so I wouldn't know what sort of weight to expect. I'm hoping it gets its first test next week when I take it to Moreton Island. If you want to see any pics of the reel or the outfit just let me know.

the weight of these sealines are over 1.0kg.

    anything lighter than say 650gms?

Arent these sealiens too heavy for bottom bashing?

    G'day

My vote for tyrnos, they have just released 2 models smaller than the 20. May fit the bill re: weight.

Re: Overhead Reel to Suit Live Fibre 15-24kg

I've got a tld 25 on the same rod - the reel is massively underdone for the setup even with drag upgrades, esp if you use a full spool of line.

sealine or tyrnos will be a much better match.

The 15-24 is quite a good stick and a lot more sensitive than they look.

    G'day

www.shimanofish.com.au Follow the link to reels, game reels and tyrnos.

There's a tyr15 and a tyr 12. Think they're trying to fill the gap left by the smaller TLD 10 and the like.

Perhaps an Avet may be an option. US made, solid aircraft grade aluminium fully machined, light but strong. I have one & use it in 100m. Buy from Tackle Direct in the US for big savings. Check the Avet website for models.
