Smile Barra Park Night Fish 23/11

Fished the barra park last night with Carl (fish_outta_water). Was lucky to get into the park as they now apparently want people to call if they're coming for the night fish and noone had (that's why they told you they weren't opening Noosa nipper). We started off at the big boys pond and Carl got a nice size barra on a concept reel he's been testing for his work. He was using some carp fishing techniques with the pellets they give you and they were by far the most effective fish taker of the night.

I switched to surface lures and on my second cast with the skywalker the water erupted at my feet as a barra had a big boof at my lure. He was only on for about 5 glorious seconds before the hooks pulled...game over man, game over. Carl had numerous hooks ups and a few more nice fish landed before we switched to the smaller lagoon (amazing how even in all that fishy water you get crowded out ).

Carl landed a few more and depsite trying all the quieter parts of the park I couldn't get another rise on the skywalker. I reverted to the pellets and finally landed my first fish when a bigger boy that was lurking in the lagoon hopped on. After a 15 minute fight I brought in a nice barra (approx 75cm) which was released back into the lagoon.

A few more smaller fish and we reverted back to the big boys pond which saw some good results. I finally hooked into a bigger fish with the snapper raider I bought earlier in the year and was rapt with its performance, particularly the rod. No more fish for the night, but a hell of a hassle getting out as they had locked the bloody gates on us. Photos will be up soon, currently moving and can't find the cables to connect the camera to the computer

They seem quite healthy, they fought like demons last night. Except for that fish caught by the other group of anglers, though being held up by the neck alone does tend to have a negative effect on your health! It's definitely worth a go for me, the fishing can still be very frustrating but they are an exciting fish to chase and seeing them and hearing these huge boofs coming from nowhere does get the blood running. Especially fishing pellets and surface lures, as you see the strike in spectacular fashion.

Nipper- don't spend much time fishing the mixed species pond but there are bream, flathead, jack and cod all in there. I actually caught a bream on a pellet in the big boys pond a few months back and another member has landed a massive jack in there as well. They're definitely not swamp donkeys mate, they still go hard. I'll try and give a bit more notice next time mate, this one was a bit of a last minute throw together.

Good fish there, but what the hell is that brown thing in the 3rd photo? It looks like you laid a massive cable and took a pic for a keepsake.

That's an ugly little eel that carl got out of the lagoon. Slimy, smelly and definitely not as good as a barra!

I think they charged me $35 and they're on roughly every fortnight on friday nights. They occasioanlly run an all night fish as well, don't know when the next one of those is on though, might be worth calling them to find out.
