    Loop knot size sp

    hi all
just wondering what most peoples thoughts were on the best knot to tie leader to jig head were for sp's. i have been using a loop knot as apparently this is better for the sp's action.

For those that do use the loop not what is approx. the optimum size for the loop to be say in cm from jig head eye to knot tying point. Im afraid my loops might be a bit to big and more of a hinderance than help( 5cm+).

as small as you can tie it will do. I don't use loops all the time as some jigheads have a slight opening in the eye which has allowed my loop knot out on a couple of fish....some good jigheads like tt's and nitro's are closed but the squidgy fine wire heads are not fully closed.

    cheers Roo.

    yanjarra, 5cm = 50mm. That's way too big.
As Roo said, as small as possible, I keep mine about 5mm on small jigheads up to 1/4 oz and a loop up to about 10 mm on the larger heads and my hardbodied lures.
    Cheers, Jeff.

Does using a loop knot make much difference. I have only just started using it on my jigs, time will tell i suppose.

to loop or not to loop?
Not enough time in the day, to many spots to fish!

I think it does make a difference, but only after you've hooked up. The extra action is going to be minimal. But once your on, the loop knot is going to save you a lot of heat and friction during the fight.

I always thought a loop knot was neccessary for lures which their action is caused by water flow over the length of the lure ie rigid hard bodies. Soft plastics, being flexible and just as their name suggests, soft, produce their own action, and therefore wouldn't require a loop knot to work properly. but don't take my word for it, I have only just begun using plastics so I will be following this thread to find out myself.

Yes sorry i was talking plastics. Loop knot to your lure definately.

heat and friction during the fight???????? wow, that's a beauty!
Julius Sumner Miller, where are you???????
Although I believe the heat and friction bit is a load of crock, if anything, a moving part such as a loop knot would create more so called heat and friction than a locked down knot!!!

If you use a blood knot or any knot that locks down on your jighead, it can move to one side of the hook eye and it will make the plastic swim out of whack!
Just as it does on a hardbodied minnow tied directly to the eye.

Do an experiment with a blood knot and move the knot to the side. Your lure will do circles.

Yes but the friction is spread over more of a surface area with a loopknot. Tied directly to split ring will create more heat on fast movers such as pelagics etc. That's the way i see it. I'm sticking to it.

Who can be bothered tying tiny loop knots out on the water? I sometimes start the day with one, only because I have tied it the night before, but on the boat, I just use a locked half blood knot. Quicker/easier to tie.

Do an experiment with a blood knot and move the knot to the side. Your lure will do circles.

Don't always catch fish though. Maybe next time the bite is slow I might try another loop knot and see if it helps. But I have caught enough fish on SP's on the old blood knot, so the bite will need to be REALLY slow.

    Re: Loop knot size sp

i go with the uni knot but dont lock it down totally, just leave it a bit short for a bit of extra action, when the fish hits it it locks down from the tension, got that tip from the starlo and bushy plastics book
