    Brisbane River bait trap "bait"

    Hey all,

I'm keen to catch some live bait (prawns) in a bait trap in the mid-Brisbane River. I have been using dried cat food and pieces of prawn as attractant but haven't had any success. Can anyone suggest some other options for "bait" in a bait trap??

    Thanks,

    Simmo

mate i have a good bit of success with bait traps for live prawns in the mid reaches but now prefer to use a castnet as you catch alot more. with the traps i fill them with old scungy bread or/also a small can of home brand cat food (pilchard or tuna flavour) with a few holes stabed in it. u cant go wrong it just requires a bit of patience.

Mate, go to the Mart that starts with A and get yourself opra house yabby traps. Use mullet of pilchards. They are $3 each . or 5 for $15, Can't go wrong with them. Put your traps close to shore though.

Yeah mate, a cast net is a must. We get loads of prawns in the cast net, mant that would be to big to get caught in those traps anyway. Although you can get prawns in them, im pretty sure tehre meant for freshwater shrimp.

bris_vegas are you getting fresh water shrimp in the cast net or are you getting normail prawns?

Dart_raider i normally use sunlight soap in my shrimp traps but that is for shrimps though but make sure it is the sunlight soap. not that fancy stuff

Sorry if that was not clear mate.

Cast Net for prawns (i think is the most effective).

    Traps for Shrimp.

You cant use Cast nets outaside of tidal waters anyway.

    Hey all,

thanks for the responses!! Haven't got a cast net so I tried the bait trap with canned cat food: didn't get any prawns but got quite a few decent sized baitfish.

    Cheers,

Stale bread is great for burleying up the prawns. You might also get a few poddys aswell.

try putting some bread or bread crums into a piece of stocking and tie the end (bait should last longer) maybe even soak it in tuna oil aswell .
