Whitsundays Advice
Hi all,
I am planning a trip up to Arlie Beach around christmas time to visit my sister who is working on Long Island.
I am also thinking of taking my boat for the trip aswell, I have a 4mtr tinny with a 15hp, I will try to attach a pic of her.
Just wandering of some spots along the way that would be worth staying a day or two.
Hervey Bay is one place I would like to have a spin around along the way up there. Any tips on locations and species would be great.
Also up at the whitsundays I would be looking to take the boat out for a spin, and as I havn't been up that way for a couple of yrs and have only been in much larger boats whilst up there I am abit concerned if it would be safe to take my boat out around there. If so anytips on locations and species would be great.
Also not having a clue about these areas, would any of these areas I am looking at over the christmas time have a closed fishing/season/areas etc??? If not fantastic but better to ask the questions first.
Thank you all in advance and any suggestions for a fish stop along the way will be taken.
Cheers Callum

Here you go, mate.

Plenty of safe areas for a tinny and plenty of good fish around.
Also, have a look at Peter Faust dam, some metre+ barras
Can't help you with Hervey Bay.

I would stop at Hervey bay, 1770, and mackay for a fish. Then hit the islands around airlie. Great fishing and diving. Last time i was up there i was diving, I was watching a mate pull the fish up from the reef while i dived it. It was mad fun. Memories to carry a lifetime.

I go to Airlie all the time. my boat is slightly bigger than yours a 4.55 with a 50hp.
Over xmas you should have light NE winds which will make the days super hot, but nice for boating. My younger brother owns a 15hp 4m boat and has been over to whitehaven beach at least 3 times on previous years and visited all the islands. But you need to pick your days. as the main channel can get really sloppy in 25k+ winds.
WHat I used to do was go into town to the internet cafe and check the weather every day. specially the afternoon weather to see if its gunna blow up.
2-3 good spots I found. troll the bays and rocky headlands on the western side of north and south mole. I caught heaps of mackerel last time. also throw poppers in the pass between south and north mole early morning for GT's
The best spot for GT's I found was the north-west edge of whitesunday island(if you can get there). ontop of the reef that mirrors the shore.
But my best piece of advice is: Get yourself a light spin outfit thats capable of casting small 20-40g slugs. Along the channel between long island and the mainland you often see big schools of tuna which are awesome fun. But you need the right gear to cast the small slugs at em.
send me a PM if you want more info.

Thanks for that fellas.
BobbyJ123 - Thanks for that link, havn't come across that site before, it will come in handy for most of the areas i will visit along the way from birssybane.
Flattie Assassin - Havn't got any diving gear (yet) but got my snorkle and flippers so i will make sure i pack them along for the ride. Will also give those locations a try along the way. Also thinkin of stopping at woodgate and using the unlces beach house for a couple of days if i can.
Flex - PM sent mate. Thanks for the great detail in locations up there, will try and get out there to the Islands weather permitting.
Thanks again and will let you know how i go when i return after the trip in the new yr.
