    Who makes a list?

I always used to make a list of things to buy and get ready for reef trips a couple of days in advance. The trips pretty much ran like clockwork.
But the last year or so I haven't been able to get out as much and have been pretty slack in my preparation.
This came back to bite me on the ass a couple of trips ago when I forgot my gaff and subsequently lost a couple of spanish mackeral boatside.
So now I'm working on a list for this friday nights reef trip.

So who makes a list... and who doesnt?
and if not.... has it come back to haunt you?

    G'day Scott

I know when I got my new boat, I used to have a very comprehensive list, but that was mainly because I couldn't leave anything at all on board and was 'getting into a routine'.

Two years later, away from the big smoke, I can know I can leave non super expensive items in the gunnel and coaming pockets (brag mat, net, gaf etc) and they wont go astray.

So with a combination of having achieved a routine and not having to stow everything, I no longer find I need to make a list. Mind you, I have 'loose items' in one dedicated canvas bag, my tackle in the appropriate tackle box etc and get it all organised the night before - right down to putting the bung in (fairly important ) and tethering the bow to stern rope.

So far so good - haven't forgotten anything.

My wife is my deckie, so I figure there is a subconscious dread of being berated (if I forget anything) that keeps me on track.

I'm always forgetting the gaff or landing net.

Sometimes making a list isn't good enough.........you actually have to physically check whether the things on the list are actually what they are supposed to be. If your freezer is in as much disarray as mine, then this can happen

I am married to a Phillipino lady, and people often ask me if she was a mail-order bride. I find this very insensitive. Australia Post lose around 2 million letters and parcels each year, and to suggest that I would trust the delivery of my wife to them is insulting in the extreme......... She was sent by DHL next day delivery.

I have lists on the wall of the shed at Evans as all the gear has to come out at the end of the day.
One for outside and one for the creek

Here in Brisbane all the gear lives in the tiny tinny so it's a clean after fishing then pack back in and bung the boat in the dungeon.
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good

    Re: Who makes a list?

i have a list, but I am a novice boatie to be fair!

I generally walk around the garage the night before and do a mental check - always find something that I left out, and strangely it is usually the gaff and net!!!

    Re: Who makes a list?

I always make a list about or month or so before. Items i'd like to have in the boat and need in the boat. Watch the net and brochures for items on sale and grab them. But as always, i'm always up late the night before packing and sorting the boat ready for an early start the next morning.
    Hate leaving things behind.
Never enough time or days in the week to go fishing.

    Re: Who makes a list?

I don't so much make a list, but I do keep all my stuff in Nully tubs that I put on the boat and take off the boat.

I have an offshore nully with all the necessary goodies, lures, plastics, terminal tackle, leader etc

And an inshore and estuary nully with similar stuff for the shallower water.

I do have some gear that overlaps which I keep in carry bags which gets placed on top of the respective nully for a trip.

I have an emergency supply in each tub of a spattering of tackle for that "just in case" moment when it may cut up offshore and you're forced to a day inside or vica-versa.

At our last home I had a secure situation for the boat and everything used to live on the boat. Where we am now, the situation is a little more open so I use the tubs as a way of making it easy to store and carry gear - there is also less clutter on the boat so this new system works for me.

I store the gaff and net with the rods in a rack so they all get put out together. Don't get me wrong I'm not anal, and certainly not that organized...I just needed to work out an easy fail safe system when we moved into our new place because I'm not a list person, but we all have one in our heads even if we don't write it down

    Cheers

    Re: Who makes a list?

I tend to have almost everything in the Boat all the time, but the stuff I leave in it is old and ratty, so of someone pinches it I do not have a spit and cry about it, like an old Gaff, landing net, a couple of knives a slection of hooks and stuff in a small tackle box, a gimbal belt, and just bits and pieces, so that if for some reason something is forgotten I still have a "standby" to get me out of trouble, and all my stuff is stored in a lockable cabinet in the garage, right beside the boat, so anything is just passed up from the locker to a person in the boat, takes a jiffy and usually nothing is lost or left behind!

I should. The amount of times I have almost forgotten to put in the sounder and GPS......

    Re: Who makes a list?

When I do empty my boat I have a shelf in my shed that is just for boat gear everything goes there then next time I go out i just go through the shelf to see what I want for the sort of fishing I am planning on doing .I also agree to take a little bit of inshore gear because the weather gurus don't always get it right and it's better to have a fish in the creek than going straight home

    Good one Kev!
Just like the time Ross took a Tupperware container of tailor fillets instead of the one that was full of pillies

    Re: Who makes a list?

    Some interesting comments guys,
Personally Rhys's system seems like the best idea for me,particularly as I have crap spread from one end of the boat to the other and wouldn't know what I had forgotton until I need it.
I have forgotton my gaff,lifejackets,sounder/gps,bungs,sandwichs and probably other stuff that I have forgotton about.

Wayne,I never forget the beer though.LOL

Kev,bit of a shock seeing those pork chops I bet.

I find it even more difficult this time of year with not getting out as regularly which disrupts my routine quite a bit, hence the need for a list.

    Re: Who makes a list?

    G'day !

Years ago Dad took us teenage boys fishing at Clontarf. Only row boats left to hire. We rowed out to the middle somewhere. Opened the packet of worms to find slices of ham.

We could have used them for bait but mum had the packet of worms back with the sisters on the shore.

So had to row back for the worms. Later we rowed back for lunch and then rowed out for fishing.

By the time we were due to row back at the end ofour hire with darkness approaching the incoming tide made progress slow. Weended up rowing to the shore and then leading the boat back as we walked along in the shallow water.

All that rowing and no fish. Oh , well, that'sfishing.

Oh, yes the topic. I have a check list in my head and each thing has its place in the tinnie.
