G'day,
I am planning a weekend fishing trip to Pottsville and am looking for someone to point me in the right direction.
Does anybody know where I could access rocky headlands or points to spin from. I would like to spin for pelagics if possible with slugs or maybe throw a livie out under a balloon.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding rocky outcrops in that area!! Just south is Hastings point. Great fishing. Awesome.
In particular if you want to get into the fish, I grew up there on holidays fishing as a kid. As you come into bogengar or Cabereeta as some people know it, which is before pottsville you will come up over a hill. If you look to the left you will see a big mountain with grass running down the side.
On the other side of that mountain is all the rock cliffs you could want to fish. It is best fishing during winter for Taylor etc. But you never know your luck, be carefull its not for the light hearted.

I was thinking of doing a bit of fishing off the rocks myself, what's most caught around there this time of year? What's the name of the big mountain. I'm coming down from Brisbane area for a day out. I've got a 13ft surf rod.
On the southern side of the rock there is like a bay, go down there you will see a rock that looks like a rasor blade, if you go down there you will actually see there is a cave that goes right up into the mountan.Originally Posted by bondy99

On the other side of the rock you dont catch any parrot fish or cod. But during winter there are some horse taylor there.
Also a mention about Hastings Point I am not sure about summer but during June and July if you go to the look out and go down the cliff, light line say 6 to 8 pound with little if any sinker and small pilly cubes will catch you as many large bream as you like.
Some of them you will pull out of three foot of water.
Thanks for the advice guys. I guess what I am targeting are larger pelagic species but there have not been too many reports of them around Brisbane so I don’t suspect that they are that far south yet.
Has anybody caught species like mackerel or tuna off these rocks and are there any reports of these species being landed? As this is what I would be targeting.
Hate to say it mate but it's a bit early for the mackerel and longtails in this part of the world. They don't even really start in any numbers until after christmas. You may be in for a chance of a cobia, they have been around lately.. You could try fingal causeway, cabarita or hastings. I know people have caught cobia at fingal.
You wont catch pelagics off the rocks even with the right time of the year, I have never seen it yet and I have fished that area for years.
But if you do catch something pelagic ............ good luck.
I spend a fair bit of time down at Pottsville, the only pelagic action i have ever seen land based is from the Brunswick rock walls with small tuna busting up about 40 metres behind the bar. I'd think it a big ask to catch mackeral off Hastings Point but would be interested to hear from people who have. If you are really keen you could swim out to Black Rock at Pottsville, i would imagine that would give you the best chance. Better off chasing jacks, trevelly and lizards in the creeks. Couple of weeks ago one of those creeks had bait fish doing a fair impression of bait fish you would find getting chased by pelagics in Moreton Bay, great to watch trevelly getting stuck into them, it was the middle of the day too but the surf was just too good for fishing. Using poppers on the top of the tide is the go, get yourself a kayak or canoe, a couple of coldies and cruise up a creek at dusk and your living the dream.
Mate I fish there also all year round and have only ever heard of one bloke getting a mackerel there, and even then I tend to think it was a bit of a yarn.
There is tailor, trevs and jew most of the year round

So how far up the creek do you guys go up. I have only done one trip in the canoe there and it turned out fishless but that is most likely due to 1/2 cartoon of beer being injested on the trip. lol
Now that i am a local i plan on frothing the daylights out of that creek.... any reports of jacks in there recently? or am I better heading down to the brunswick?
Not enough time in the day, to many spots to fish!
