Thread: Moving to Melbourne

    Re: Moving to Melbourne

I have alot of mates in melbourne and they absolutely love it. Sure they come up to the north coast of new south wales and south east queensland but at the end of the day they always end up back home.
The cultural scene around melbourne is second to none mate. It has some amazing jazz clubs and underground left hand music bars. If you're that way inclined you cant go wrong. The women you will find are very mixed, from the "pool-cue-in-ass" type to the "wheres-the-closest-bed-or-simlar-object" so you'll have fun sussing that all out, and if you can serenade them then you are halfway to finding their clothes on your floor.
Ive never fished down there but landbased you will have a ball fishing for salmon with flies. Try your finger length floating popper flys in whites or blues as the salmon as regularly feeding on small whitebait near the surface. They're rats**t to eat but god do they fight hard!
Goodluck with the move and i hope its everything you hope it'll be. And who knows, you might even end up flying up one day.
Just remember, RE: the marlin query, we have such a large number of marlin in our waters that they are even regularly targeted off the shore in parts of new south wales to about 80-100kg.

Now that is the kind of response that I have been waiting for, one that hasn't bashed Melbourne Ya, that kinds like my kind of fishing, both for the chicks and for the salmon....sometimes the fish are easier to land though

Do any of your buds tye or flyfish as well? or drink beer

As far as the Marlin fishing goes, it has always been a dream of mine. How far south do they run along the coast by the way? and how far offshore do you usually have to go to get them?

G.O. - if you're gonna get serious about marlin and sailfish then I think you would want to head further north - ie far north qld or WA.
oh - and beer drinking is an Aussie pasttime. hard to find a fishing bloke that doesn't enjoy the odd bevy or three!

Ya i'll have to do that, especially when my dad comes out to visit in a year or so as its something he's always wanted to do. When is the best time of year to go for Marlin anyways? When I was in Thailand if I recall it was late Oct. or something?

hey gravity, ignore all those northern boys, if your idea of fun is 40+ degree days and 98% humidity then go for it,

melbourne is cooler by average but coming from the uk (as i do) it is never that cold so a cannuk like yourself will be in heaven.

i dont do much fly fishing myself but if you want some pointers for some good fishing spots when you get here give me a shout

i can even point you in the direction of some good pubs/clubs with a decent live music scene, although this being australia you will have to get used to the aussie idea of good music (although the john butler trio is probably the best guitar based 3 piece band i have ever seen live, and they are local)

so in closing, you will love melbourne mate, plenty of fishing, music & chicks and the weather is great

Have seen Marlin caught (In Qld) Just wanted to firstly say to everyone to stop giving Queensland a plug. We are already bursting at the seams with immigrants as it is. Melbourne is the best city okay!!!!
Good luck with the move and welcome. Hey if you settle into Melbourne and don't like it you can always follow the rest of the Melbournites and head up to Queensland.

    Re: Moving to Melbourne

Hey Mate. I've got a brother living in Geelong and he migrates annually to Eden on the new south wales/ Victoria border to chase Pelagics.
Around Easter time he migrates to South Australia and chases big snapper at Augusta
    He also dives for crayfish

When I lived in Victoria up to my teens we would chase trout which must be in nearly every waterway in the state as well as redfin and blackfish. We also fished for snapper from the rocks around the great ocean road as well as salmon, flathead and bream.

Fishing is a way of life for a lot of people in Victoria.

Snowy mountain trout would have to be a must for you to chase, I would think.

Good luck with the move, I think you will love it.

    Chris
