As guido described, watch your wash on the bank when travelling about 10 knots or so. They will flick up quite often on a dropping tide after the water has left the mangroves. I generally find that the run in scatters them fairly quickly.
I use mono nets I build for myself that have many layers to them. Makes for a much more open net and less of a balloon effect so they sink quickly esp with 1/8" gal chain around the bottom.
Use mono. Nylon is a sucker to use and is heavy. With regards to the net opening, it all depends on the person and spread. If the net is made properly it will open completly. Another hint , the heavier the net the more prawns you catch. hint number 2. Cast during the runout tide, the prawns tend to group then. Hint number 3. once you cast move say 20 to 30 meters up current and cast again. Prawns will move quite quickly. Hint 4. find the crowd
I have used many nets over the years. I currently own three. An 8foot mono surecatch that is used an abused. Its currently at the end of its life, but at $50 I am happy to throw it anywhere. I'd rather tear a $50 net than a $300 net. the great thing about the smaller nets to is that you can cast them for hours. Great for finding the prawn before switching to the bigger nets. Also fantastic for herring and smaller bait fish. Dont go any smaller than 8foot as they actually become harder to cast.
I also own a 10ft mono top pocket net, which i use for prawns. A little bit dearer and also not to bad to throw.
The last net I own is a 12ft mono drawstring with chain weights. This is for serious prawn use, but its a pain to use. Its heavy too, and its hard to swing it out to get a full cast..
AS for catching the prawn, without a boat its hard to get a feed. I miss my boat! If you have a sounder, look for the holes in the creeks and cast around the edges of the holes. I have also had lots of lucks casting into the deeper parts of tight bends.
Prior to the drought, there is two times a year where you will be able to bag a 20litre bucket of banana's in a few hours in the creeks. This does not work for me anymore.
Also, as someone said, dont keep your net in a bucket. If you can, hang it out of the sun when its not in use. You get a fuller cast. A soak in fabric softner will also help, but not as much as keeping it hanging of the rafters. Guess where i keep mine? In a bucket I used to hang them, but no room these days!
