    Angry 225 evinrude troubles

i have a 225 evinrude that loses power at +4000rpm which hasent been to bad still cruze at 20-25kts and runs fine just couldent go flat stick

found another mechanic took for on water test to show the problem and he seemed confident he could rectify the problem
picked the boat up a week later and a 1000 clams later new flywheel and stator

put boat in water today and its worse than ever
loosing power at 2800rpm to 3000rpm only getting me to around 15kts on average i would of prefered to keep the original problem.

if i stop the boat and hit full throttle it will go to 4000rpm for maybe 2-3 mins before dropping back to around 3000rpm with the peg flat

has anyone had a similar problem or know the cause,
the boats been to 2 different mechanics who have just raped my wallet
and really not helped at all

    HELP ME SOMEBODY

Just gotta be fuel, fuel delivery to engine.

With a fine tooth comb go over the fuel system from tank to where each line enters each carb.

    cheers fnq

    Jace,

what year 225 is it?? 6 carbs can be a handfull for a novice. some of the 225s had air bleeds and some had mixture screws and they all had intermediate jets too. Be interested to hear where the others have gone in relation to fixing the problem?

    Jace,

Keen to hear what year engine it is as there are some models that had big issues with the lost foam casting method.

If its around the 1990 mark then you will have issues. But lets know its year first.

I think your flywheel and stator mechanic had no idea whatsoever. The only problems with OMC flywheels is the magnets (which you can reglue) and stator trouble on an OMC is very rare.

I 'd be looking more to dropped cylinder due to an ignition fault (powerpack) or a dropped cylinder due to water ingress to the cylinder caused by a corroded cylinder liner.

    Cheers

Mate if you take it to Downes Marine at Bowen Hills Allison Street he will set you straight, Allans a great bloke and should be able to sort the problem, Its a family established business since 1932 (or thereabouts) and he is a specialist johnson/evinrude service agent and we have been going to him for 20+ yrs.

This gives a clue perhaps? "I 'd be looking more to dropped cylinder due to an ignition fault (powerpack) or a dropped cylinder due to water ingress to the cylinder caused by a corroded cylinder liner"

Don't pay too much attention to this because I am not at all qualified but the quote from BM's reply bought to mind a similar problem with a 3 cylinder 40hp Tohatsu. When the problem began we did not have any idea what was going on but, as it turned out, we had resistor type plugs fitted. One was breaking down intermittently. Initially there was hardly any vibration, just a mysterious loss of power. Replacing with non resistor type spark plugs fixed the problem.

    Could it be that simple??

I guess you should also chase up the first repair, as it is not fixed and you paid good money for it.

    cheers for replies lads
    its 95 model
engine was rebuilt 2 years ago and has never been the same
possibly good parts switched for old because it ran beaut b4 the rebuild

the flywheel had a cracked magnet that had been previosly repaired
and the stater had also some kind of dodgy repair
    thanks for the refrences
the power pack/cdi(is that right) has a crack in it mercman the mechanic mentioned it ??

    Re: 225 evinrude troubles

I suspect a dropped cylinder (or 2) from the powerpack.
