im not arguing with your judgement, but this little dam does do funny things. i have been there in the cold months and the surface bite has occured at 17 degrees, but not at 27. sort of strange but i am looking forward to using them unweigthed soft plastics on the surface. it is something that i am working on, 3 inch slider with a resin head has produced fish after fish over the hard bodied surface lures. seems to get a more agressive reaction, and it lands a lot quieter.
let you know how i went

& I'm no expert on the place ...... most people that I've spoken too have all said to take some topwater( poppers , zara puppies & fizzers) along ( Saratoga in particular) ......... Yeh we got a few fish on barely weighted powerbait 4" minnows ..... thrown into the shallow banks
Anyhow ... have a great trip ..... Nagg
i was there nilly and a half months ago and had no results on surface lures. using cicada pop, skitter pops, jitter bugs. nuthignh seemed to work had a nice hit on the skitter pop but couldnt set the hooks.....got all 15 fish on smak spinnerbaits.
How ya living?
Got over 50 fish last week, bass, goldens & spanglies on the cast.
Its not worth heading up the dam to the sticks with the lack of water, time would be better spent fishing the edges & many drop offs between the wall & old dozzer or farm machinery thats got a float on it, way up the dam.
We had good success on 70/80mm gold & white squidgy fish with 3/8 nitro jig heads & Atomic bass grubs.
Don't waste too much time with the surface bite in the mornings, we found it very slow & the bites where fickle when we got them!

i find if they are slow on the surface bite i will change my surface techniques to bream style lures. unweighted placcys and smak skywalkers are dynamite. it seems a little silly but it not a regularly used techniques and something different is always heplful in these situations. gary glitter in the squidgy fish are the gun at this dam, even fly is good. anything that lands quite works well. apparently throughout the week they have been chewing on the surface off their brains, so hopefully it will fish similar with the buildup to the forth coming storm period over the weekend.

I have found it best to try surface for a while every morning at cania, I have been there and tried surface 2 mornings for zip and on the 3rd morning picked up 30 odd in a 2 hour session. Other times the very first morning we have nailed them on surface and the next 2 days got zip. Never seems to be a definate patern to surface so i always give it 30min before changing to subsurface.

it is a funny bite hey..... toonumbar is my home impiundment and it is the most consistent surface bite fishery that i have every fished. althought the bass are not huge in there like other nsw dams, it is consistent dependant on number of boats on it. bass or toga i will be happy

Had a mate from Dalby fished toonumbar not that long ago and said it was a great dam. They had a good time and caught quite a few fish.
