Heading up to mondruan and just started to get into fly fishing
I’m going to put the other rods in too but I will give the fly a run first.
But just chasing some photos or tips on what fly I should try
What weight fly gear should I use / what size leader
The other thing I would love is for you guys to share some of your secret spots but i understand if you want to keep your spots top secret.

    Thanks fatboy

    Glen,
Have a chat to Paul & Pete, both of them are very capable fly fisho's. Paul also is the co-creator of the DK Dancer, one of the "big three" barra flies according to Rod Harrison. Paul is at Lake Monduran as we speak.

    Cheers

gold bomber style fly, if you tie it keel style can end up pretty snag resistant and can add a rattle aswell.

    Fat boy,
I agree that the DK dancer is a great fly however I reckon the original material that Paul and Lionel used to create the fly is not real crash hot (that being DNA) , I reckon its a better fly when constructed out of slinky fibre or similar . The thing is that these are big flies and the last thing you want is trapped water so slinky fibre is a great material for achieving bulk and water resistance.
Other flies that work really well are a Pop lip , and a polar fibre minnow again with slinky fibre and with a dubbed body. Dan Blanton's whistlers are a good fly to use with a floating line as the in your face presentation is outstanding , but like all barra fishing it really depends on the fishes mood before you make a selection and as you know ,there are many variables that will affect this and where you will find them hanging out . I hope you pin one and stick with it as it can be a long time between fish when fly fishing for impoundment Barra.
and don't discount the old Deceiver or Clouser for that manner these are both proven old school Barra flys

    Hi,

These work well, What you need is a fly with lots of "bulk" that displaces water. When I used to fly fish Tinaroo for big barra, found a large deceiver pattern would work well- 6/0 fly hooks with up to 20 feathers and lots of bucktail or synthetic on the head. Lots of flash on side works when water is dirty. Rember the barra usullyy feed on tilapi and other small bait fish, so "matching the hatch" is the go.

    Good luck

    Hi,

The Sal-mul-mac fly is a good fly for impoundment BARRA!

It has a bulky body and a perfectly slow sink-rate.

    Try using 1.5 m of 60 - 80lb leader.

A 9 - 10 weight rod is also good too.

Here is a photo of the Sal-mul-mac fly + a 112cm Faust fish!

    Thanks,

Re: BARRA fly what size and colour

    Flyfisho,

Your right, it's a 8/9 weight Mega and it actually broke on this fish as it was landed near the boat!

The Sal-Mul-Mac is a great shallow water fly as it will sink very slowly and you have the option of adding a weedguard by tying a thick mono peice near the hook eye and bending it to face the hook point.

The 112cm fish in the image engulfed the fly as it was paused for 10 seconds and sinking into the shallow weed.

Fatboy, long casts with the fly rod will improve your chance of landing a barra on fly at Monduran.

Use great stealth and long casts over areas you are confident with and have persistence with your technique.

It's good to practice your fly casts on the lawn before you go out so you feel use to casting the flies used for barramundi.

Lefty Krey has made various books which teach all of the basic types of casts and how to do them. These are great and have a lot of information.

Re: BARRA fly what size and colour

Yep Nice rods those , well they used to be . I had one also but it also snapped on a trip to Weipa , I am spewin that it was replaced with the cross current , I find a massive difference between the two .
Some good advice on the casting there , although Lefty Kreh is good teacher for beginners and intermediate , you will find DVDs and books by Mel Krieger more informative to those who can already cast well in particular his DVD "the essence of fly casting" . These aren't available easily in Australia but you can get them from the FFF website , you will also find properly trained and qualified instructors in your area when you search for casting instructors under the "instructor certification" tab .

Re: BARRA fly what size and colour

Has anyone had any sucess with the large gurgler style flies for impoundment barra??

  15. #15

Re: BARRA fly what size and colour

i think a large gurgler would work on them as they have been caught on popper flys so just give it a go, hehe i will be. the tiny ones work awsome on bream so a big one should work to. i will be trying some crease flys on them next time so i will let you's guys now how i go
