are beach worms available on south straddie
I spoke to a pro beach wormer a few weeks ago about just this topic, as i can never catch them, so i need all the help i can get and then some.
He still uses the good old pipi, but they are getting harder to find and catch recently. Few things and tips he did tell me..don't use the worming pliers you can buy in the shops, they're illegal to use in queensland. Make sure you've got sand between your fingers and the worm otherwise you'll never catch them. Once (If) you do manage to grab one, keep the pressure on them as you pull it up, as he said they have hundreds of legs which just hold onto the sand, the more you can keep the pressure on the better, cos eventually they should just slip out. He tried showing us over a few beers, but he holds the pipi between his middle finger and his ring finger, waits for the worm to latch onto it, then grabs the worm with his pointer and thumb.
I still haven't tried it as yet, but i dare say i'm going to be soaked by the time i eventually do. If you see some one on teewah beach frustrated and wet trying to catch worms..don't laugh.
Never enough time or days in the week to go fishing.
worming can be good fun, and rewarding once you get the hang of it, I was up on my Local Beach yesterday with my son to get some Worms, when we were heading home, there was a guy worming and we stopped to have a "fishermans chat" he showed us the biggest worm I have seen in my life, (even when compared to the North Coast NSW worms) it was like a garden hose, and he had about (I guess)a metre or so of it, before it broke in half! looks like you would need a gaff for it, might bite your finger off!
i was taught by an old fella that was unreal to watch at work, his bigest tip to me was make sure you have at least 5mm of sand between the worm and your fingers and when you see them arch squeeze using the flat of your fingers to clamp the wormand pull straight up. the sand being used to grip the slimmy buggers. He always used and old fish frames and a pippi.
Yep same here saw an old fella doing it went up and had a chat and he showed me how.Couldn't manage one that daybut the next day went down to give it a crack and pulled about 20 worms.Same theory as what is written above.Very handy skill to have, and everything in the surf eats them.Ben
You said Squid as its firmer, anyone ever tried plastics as the hand bait??
