Went to Borumba for the first time on the wknd. Spent half of Friday counting down the clock at work snapping at the bit to get on the road. Finally got there at about 8pm Friday night, set up the tent and caught a good few hours shut eye.
On the water by about 8am Saturday (missed the early morning session as the miss’s doesn’t like getting up too early, Grrrr). Headed straight up into the timber passing all the flash boats there for the Basstastic up into Kangaham Creek and a few casts in I was on, got it in after a little interruption from a tree or two, a nice 42cm bass. A few hours had pasted and I was continuing up the same arm and then there was a huge splash (which I quickly casted near) then another and another, finally saw a huge saratoga casted in his direction and made him have a look at the spinnerbait, but to no obvail, he just wasn’t interested, continued up further right up as far as I could go, a few more small saratoga had a chomp at my popper about a rod length from the boat but no hook ups. Then late in the arvo sun setting behind us I was on, the green and black popper was smashed near the boat, after a short fight, my first saratoga was landed, a 74cm specimen, caught on my 1.5kg slider grub outfit. After a few photo’s he was released and we had a few more casts before heading back before it got too dark.
Sunday morning on the water at about the same time, but decided to head up Yabba Creek, Kim landed a few little bass and a few yella’s, right up the end of the creek we found ourselves again, and we were right into a hot bite, Kim had a HUGE Toga take her spinnerbait right at the boat before quickly getting air born and spitting it back at her. She has this happen to her a couple times within the next few hours (as did I sadly) then finally one decided to stay attached and I landed him, just a small one compared to yesterdays but it was still as pretty, it went 52cm. Stayed around the same spot till late in the arvo seeing one of the most amazing sites I have ever seen, saw large toga completely air born to grab a white butterfly flying a little too close to the water, it was awesome! Through the next few hours we lost at least another 6 fish before the rain came and set in for the arvo so we packed it in and headed off.
All up it was a fabulous first time at the dam. All our fish were released to fight again another day. We found that pearl, and white and green spinnerbaits worked for us. This is the first time I have posted photo’s so I hope they work.
