Please help with camps in North Queensland!!!!

    Hi Everyone,

I am planning on going up north over the christmas holidays for 2 weeks. I Need to be within 3 hours of Cairns at most, as i have a birthday party to go to. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good camping areas, with good fishing. We are self relliant so the camp does not need to have any facilities.(in fact that is preferable) We have a small tinny at the moment, but may have a 16ft by the time we go.

If you can help with any places you know of it would be most appreciated.

    Cheers, Travis.

What are you looking for in a campsite? Do you want seclusion or want to be near the ocean? Suppose you'll be fishing... Cardwell is 2 hrs from Cairns and it's an easy 30 minute boat ride to Garden Island (right in front of Goold Island). Camping is allowed on Garden Island, permits are available through the Cardwell counsel. This is a real magic spot, Plenty of awesome fishing all around Garden and Goold. Also really good snorkeling with painted crays to be easily found. If you aren't into island camping and you have a 4wd, head to Blencho Falls southwest of Cardwell. Bit of a pain in the a-hole to get to but also a real magical spot. Just a short hike to the herbert river where you'll be catching some monster barra. Let me know if you need directions to either of these places.

    Happy camping!

Another thought is lake tinaroo, mainly for the ability to go for a swim without fear at any time, we stayed at karlie (sp) campsite which was nice many other campsites also (try and pick one the skiboats don't frequent), we could pull the boat almost up at the tent.
The first time we stayed there during a trip from NSW we arrived just as the barra bash was concluding as soon as some blokes moved out we setup in their spot then I headed off to the weigh in to see whats up, think from memory the sums worked out to 1 barra weighed in per 20 competitors, decided to not bother chasing them and ran around in the boat chasing redclaw swimming and relaxing, until a winnebago turned up next door with german tourists, friendly bunch those then the great weekender? film crew turned up (the star of the show asked if we were not from QLD when all we gave him was blank stares when he came over) anyway hard to find real seclusion up here lots of areas locked up and most funneled to where it suits the authorities.

    cheers fnq

Tinaroo can be nice and cooler too with plenty of good size redclaw [mmmm love red claw].Hinchinbrook island is always worth a look, there are a number of caravan parks at Cardwell and Lucinda and some nice camoig spots on Hinchinbrook itself. The Haven in the channel this one has a toilet and a small moutain stream to have a dip in.There is also Macushla point it has a toilet and good access to Missionary bay and Gould and Garden islands.Mission beach where I am is a pretty spot with nice caravan parks theres a bunch of islands close including Dunk island.Good luck
