    Okuma Spin Reels

I am looking at getting an Okuma Eclipz 60 spin reel for spinning for tuna and mackeral aswell as bouncing bigger plastics over reefs outside.
I have seen this reel handle big gt's and the like but the guy at BCF tried to put me off it. Any help would be great. Cheers Pathfinder

Sounds like BCF have employed someone with knowledge . After looking at various Okuma reels the other day ( for a present) I could not part with the money even on a higher end Alumina ...... bought a Daiwa Advantage ( paid a bit more though)
Sorry but they just feel like bulky junk IMO ( but I am spoilt) .... Nagg

Is that the high speed black and gold model your talking about or the baitrunner. Okuma make there gears out of stainless steel, great i hear you say that will keep the rust at bay, wrong stainless steel is to soft and strips way too easy, it is far better to use a marine grade bronze. i have seen more than a healthy number of the high speed okumas come back with stipped gears from trying to muscle a decent fish in, they are good value for high speed spinnign but stay away from reef work.

Likewise Jeremy, seen QUITE A FEW okuma spin reels come back...most have been used for spinning etc.

i would suggest looking at something else also

Last year I bought a high speed Epix 50. It has seen a reasonable amount of work on Tuna and Macks and has held up OK so far. I picked it up on special for around $80 and at that price I rate it as pretty good value. I would probably not pay the RRP for one though.

I got an epix80 a year or so ago. Like others, I got it at a good price ($96.00) so was worth the risk. So far has held up well. I use it offshore.

If you do want to go one of these, I would go a bit bigger. The eclipze 80 (or is it 90?) has a moulded handle that would be good for offshore use.

I have had a epix 60 for a couple of mackerel seasons now and its help up pretty well and caught plenty of fish, I would say I even prefer it to my tss4, its much smoother and good value when its on special under a $100

    Re: Okuma Spin Reels

I have had 2 epix 60 for 3 years now and they are still going. I use them for everything from high speed work to reef fishing. The drag is as good as the day I got them but when you have a fish on they tend to flex a lot in the handle and the body. For the money, they have been a top reel. I am about to get a new Diawa Emblem Pro as they are a nice reel to use. It all comes down to $$$ and what you have in the piggy bank.

Someone once told me that Okuma give a flietime warranty on all their reels - is this true?

    Re: Okuma Spin Reels

    Yes, lifetime warranty.

I have 2 Okuma Mistique reels and use them for everything. Even taken them to Weipa and given them a floggin on the tuna and queenfish for 2 weeks and they still work perfectly.
