    GPS mounting

i have recently bought a garmin 178C and have to mount it to my 4.2 tinny. firstly do i need to mount the antennea for the GPS on the centreline of the boat or can i hide it behind the nav light brackets so it doesnt get knocked

secondly what methods have people used to mount the GPS unit where they can see it easily. i have been told to get a RAM mount??? but any other ideas will be great

Not sure about the antennae mounting as mine is only a Handheld unit however would recommend the RAM Mount for just about anything. I have 2 Ram Mounts in the boat, one for GPS and the other for the sounder, they are great to get the best view depending on how you sit / stand and also use the mount to swing the unit behind the console for protection when traveling.
Johhny Appleseed GPS have a good range of mounts.

Ditto on the RAM mounts. They are the best mounts I have ever used. Very versatile. If I remember correctly RAM makes a sounder mount that has a spot to mount the antenna on the back of the mount. You may want to check it out. If not, mount it anywhere it has a clear view of the sky.

it does not need to be centred, it just needs a clear view to the sky, without any obstacles to block the signal.

Here you can see how and where mine is mounted in my 4.2 tinnie,as long as the areal has clear view of sky it will work just fine.
The mount isnt a ram but it does swivel so I can view it from anywhere in the boat.

    Cheers Craig
