I managed to sneak away for an early morning plastics session on monday, met up with Ash at the fishermans Island ramp and headed out to the whalves. It was dead around the whalves on the southern side so we headed for some rock walls and got onto some fish straight away. Ash got his first squire at 37cm and I got a 47cm shortly after. Then Ash got smoked on 10lb fireline, 12lb leader! He's only fairly new to fishing and it was a new experience for him! - very funny! Then I got done as well and the shoe was on the other foot!
Things went quiet after that, for the next couple of hours we caught a small cod and another brown spotted species that I've never seen before, it went 37cm. Can anyone ID it and tell me if they are any good to eat please?
I finally got a good fish on, but it smoked me back into the rocks. Then I got a nice 35cm bream. I hooked one other really good fish but pulled the hooks after just a few seconds.
We headed back to the whalves for no further action other than a foul hooked stingray that kept Ash entertained for a few minutes.
We had a good fun session, a bit slow at times, and it would have been great to stop the bigger fish - but hey that's fishing!
Sounds like a great morning, good to see a few squire still being caught ,Haven't fished the river for a month and wondered if any squire were being caught. The smokers? big squire or jacks do you think. Far side mate still in 10 to 13 metres?Sorry mate but good shows of bait? Interested to know Cheers
Sounds like a good morning on the river. With the ramp to the river being only 15 minutes away ,I must try it more often. rather than waste fuel driving to the Goldy to try and find Jacks.
Cheers
According to the new edition of grants it's a gold spotted blubberlip, but it's also called a netted morwong or sweetlip. They taste great if caught off a clean bottom.
Last weekend i got to the river late and missed the action. Some good table fish caught but went of the chew early in the day about 7 am. Agood sized brim to. Great morning sesh.
