Ross river barra and closed season

I noticed Ross river (Freshwater sections) is not on the Fisheries list of impoundments where barra can be fished for during the closed season. Im aware alot of the barra go over the wall during rains and so can join the breeding stocks. The river is not flowing at the moment though so they cannot get over and are therefore not in a position to breed. My question is do barra in freshwater still get the urge to breed this time of year or do they only get it when in the salt?

Yes they get the urge hence the reason they need to get to the salt. Have you ever noticed that around this time that most of the big girls are getting trolled up in the main basin. They try to get down stream to the salt but are stopped by a big man made wall.

Cool. So then it would make sense that even though the water is not flowing now it could do so before the breeding season is over. Therefore they could get a chance to breed so enforcing a closed season makes sense.

    Thanks for your help

i lived in townsville for a year in 2000. i used to fish the weirs and noticed that they were near the weir walls at breeding time, they were hanging around there waiting for rain so they could get over the wall.

Yes but remember, nobody is allowed to 'target' barra in the fresh Ross River during closed season.
