Yamaha vs. Tohatsu 2 Stokes in 9-18 range
Hello, Am now cruising in Guatemala with a 1984 Evenrude for our dingy and looking to upgrade for reliability, to a 9, 15 or 18 hp. 2 stroke outboard. I see that this year has brought some changes to those engines for both manufacturers. Any light shed on these engines pro or con would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I guess without going into any brand names and 2 stroke V 4 stroke or any of that crap, USUALLY the 9 and 15HP are almost the same motor (weight and size) so I guess for a small difference in purchase price you will have quite a bit to gain from going for the 15 and I do believe that the Merc 15HP is actually a Tohatsu 18HP so I assume it will also be the same weight as a 9.9HP

Re: Yamaha vs. Tohatsu 2 Stokes in 9-18 range
Have had both 9.9HP Mariner 1980 version from new (Manufacturer was Yamaha) also 15hp 2002 Yamaha both purchased new and nil problems with either. Some mates have 18hp Tohatsu and are happy. However my boat only rated to max 15hp.
Word of caution, don't exceed you boat plate on rated hp, or insurance companies take dim view and might refuse to payout on claims.
