    Keppel Islands

Been up @ yeppoon for couple weeks now, working on the new shopping centre. Have been out in the boat 3 times. It is such a large area to get to know.
Have had a lot of success off the beach and rocks, as well as boat. I am yet to get a barra, but my workmate got that 113cm barra landbased.(posted in estuary)

Went out today(sunday) in awful conditions. a 4.2 open tinnie and 15-20knt northerlies don't mix real well.

Trolled halcos and spoons from the harbour over to north keppel. Got a couple of hits but no fish boated.

Seen a few schools of tuna out from conical rocks. They weren't interested in anything i threw at them.

Threw poppers till my arms hurt at bommies, rock ledges, gravel patches. Nothing. was hoping to find a gt in the current lines.

Scored a little coral trout 40cms on trolled black andgold halco.

Decided to head home round 11am. I was down one trolling rod,as the eyelet broke on the trip over. Put my new capricorn 4500j in the holder and put a white with orange head on. 30lb suffix pro braid and 50lb leader. 10mins later zzzzzzzzzzzz capricorn was screaming. I had to put my left leg on the tiller steer and chase him as i was fishing alone. Chased/fought him for just under an hour.
then out of the murky water appeared my first spanyiad. crapped my pants as i only had a 300mm long gaff and no bash stick. Finally got it in with a lot of jumping when it hit the floor. Bashed with the aluminium gaff handle for bout 5mins. What a work out.

Anyway he weighed 55lb, and was 163cm long.

Is this an average size spano?????
Heaps of mackeral steaks in the freezer.

JT it was really rough outside the protected cover of the islands. But with a reward like this, it all was worth it.

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

Same, my dad has been eating local fish for 60 years and I have been eating it since I was a baby and no cases of it either. We know a lot of locals that eat fish and I don't know anybody that has had it. I am sure it is around, but it probably isn't that common.
